While we, the moderators, were on vacation, we had another spamming incident in which a disgruntled guest of a local hotel posted 15 (yes, fifteen) separate messages containing more or less the same complaints in as many different sub-topics. This same person also posted about a dozen of these anonymously, but also posted a few with his name showing (i.e. non-anonymous).

While the purpose of this newsgroup is to provide discourse amongst its participants, repeating the same message over and over, whether good or bad, is not acceptable. Most newsgroup readers check for the newest postings and read the messages in that fashion, so one post in the right topic area is more than enough to get the message across.

15 messages on the same issue is another form of spamming we will not tolerate in this newsgroup.

All the anonymous postings of said user have been removed, and the user has been, for the time being, barred from responding in the newsgroup. Should the party committing the offense be reading this, please contact us to see how we might be able resolve this situation.

For those of you unfamiliar with the term "spam" as it applies to the Internet, it refers to the unsolicited and unwanted posting or sending of commercial messages. In paper terms, it's junk mail.

Last night, a newsgroup user "spammed" the newsgroup, most likely out of ignorance, posting numerous messages about his music performance availability. One of the very few rules we have for posting to the newsgroup is that no blatant self-promotion is permitted.

One of this user's messages might have barely been acceptable if placed in the right section of the newsgroup, but the four or five duplicate messages with this promotional message posted in other section was definitely not. Such multiple posting qualifies as spamming.

All messages on this topic posted by the user have been deleted, and the user's account has been locked.

Why are we sharing this with you? Because we want other potential spammers to realize this is a moderated (however loosely) newsgroup, and we take spamming seriously, and will take prompt action against anyone who spams.

Sincerely,

The InfoBonaire Newsgroup Moderators
