My wife and invested in Lycra dive skins in preparation for our upcoming trip. Mostly for sun protection, but also in case we encounter any stinging critters. My question: do people normally wear a bathing suit under these things?

you'll want to take off the skin between dives to tan or refresh or whatever...a suit would be recommended

We always wear a suit under our skins Our skins are partially on with arms tied at our waist until we get to where we're going.

I wear a diveskin for sun protection, and rarely wear anything under it. Not sure why you would, unless you planned on taking it off to go swimming.
