Just before the sun set below the horizon -- and I mean just before -- the entire horizon turned a slight green color for a few seconds.

There are two possible explanations of the green flash (which I've never seen). One is that it is some sort of refractive event when the sun just sets in the ocean, in other words, it is something that happens in the atmosphere, and should be visible to all observers at the same time and place.

My wife and I have seen the Green Flash several times here at home in Michigan and in Bonaire. Just as the last sliver of sun goes below the horizon. The sky has to be very clear without much or any haze. We saw the Green Flash 5 nights in a row one year at the Bruce's Carib Inn.

Great trip reports! Saw the green flash for the first time during our last trip, the first two weeks of June. My husband missed it, he wasn't watching the horizon like I was. He was photographing the great light on the clouds and captured a beautiful shot shortly after the sun disappeared

Relatively speaking, the depth of the ocean near Bonaire is a thin sliver of the earth's diameter. Because of the curvature of the earth, at sunset for a fraction of a second, the sun is below the horizon but a portion of it is shining right through nothing but water (when viewed from a vantage point overlooking the ocean.) So for this split second, there is going to be a very powerful refraction of light through the water that is broadcast onto the horizon, creating the green flash.

nope it's the brites i'm sure of it..the green lime juice disperses unevenly through out the brite and creates a flash back image when the sun reflects off the back bottom of the bottle reflecting back across the surface of the brite and lime mix...it's all documented and very scientific

we were lucky enough to get one of the end rooms at Belmar last year in Nov, and a large group had gathered for the sunset as the skies were beautiful with no haze..as the sun set the anticipation grew and grew..MIL was with us for the first time and was confused over what was going on, cameras were ready and when the moment came, everybody screamed and celebrated as much as when the Saints won the super bowl this year..me, didn't see a thing, wife, didn't see a thing, MIL...just thought everyone was crazy..guess you have to have better eyes than I do to see the green flash...seemed like a good excuse for a party anyway

Hey Lance and Sandra,We will be on the Houston flight on Friday night. Hope Deb saved some of the Dolphin time for us. Seems as though she sees a lot of Dolphins when she is there. We have a resident seahorse out in front of windstock on the south end. Hope we are able to find him again.Mike Cindy Steve and Wylene

I have witnessed more than a few flashes in my time on Bonaire. I saw a couple three weeks ago off the stern of the Aggressor as well. Many people on the boat never heard of this phenomena, and they witnessed it with us for the first time. It was pretty cool. Kathi thinks I'm nuts, but who don't know that? She has never seen one and thinks it does not exist. She does not have the best eyesight either. LOL
