update for July 25

Andy
---------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Loggerhead 'Extra' is now definitely moving on a northwest track towards Mexico or the western tip of Cuba. She swam over 100 km in the last day and is now more than 1300 km from Bonaire. Water depth in her present location is over 2000 m, so she is probably not feeding at this time.

'Tom' the male hawksbill remains along the north coast of Klein Bonaire.

I will keep you posted,

update for Jul 27

Andy
-------------------------------------------

Dear Friends,

Loggerhead 'Extra' keeps on swimming and swimming, yesterday another 110 km to the northwest, now nearly 1500 km from Bonaire. She is heading straight towards the gap between the Yucatan Peninsula and Cuba, so maybe aiming to go as far as the Gulf of Mexico. If all continues to go well, we will find out soon.

In the meantime, male hawksbill 'Tom' remains near Klein Bonaire.

I will keep you posted,

Dear Friends,

The loggerhead 'Extra' swam another 80 km yesterday and is now over 1500 km from Bonaire. She is located midway between Jamaica and Honduras, and just swam past the shallows of the Pedro Bank.

Hawksbill 'Tom' is still with us at Klein Bonaire.

I will keep you posted,

update for Jul 29
Andy

----------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Finally, "our" loggerhead 'Extra' seems to be slowing down: yesterday she swam only 60 km and changed course towards the west. She is nearly 1600 km (1000 miles) away from Bonaire, now swimming along the edge of a very large shallow bank, which may be a landmark to guide her to her feeding site. Hopefully we will find out soon!

"Tom" the male hawksbill is still near Klein Bonaire.

Heck, I'd be slowing down, too! LOL. She's possibly spotted a nice resort area to stop for a little R & R?? LOL. Carole

upate for July 30

------------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Loggerhead 'Extra' is now over 1600 km from Bonaire, off the Honduras coast and swimming only 40 km yesterday. She is on the edge of a very large shallow water area that extends all the way to Nicaragua (and includes the Miskito Cays), which is known to have very good turtle habitat. 'Extra' is most likely approaching her "home" feeding grounds now and we will see in the next few days if and where she settles.

In the meantime, male hawksbill 'Tom' remains near Klein Bonaire.

I will be off tomorrow to Puerto Rico until October, to work with turtles at Mona Island. There is a chance that we will find 'Schillie' there, one of last year's tracked hawksbills. If we do see her, I will let you know right away.

Bonaire turtle tracking updates will continue to be issued as long as our animals are moving, with maps and other info provided by our super-volunteer, Andy Uhr.

Bon wiekent!

Update for Jul 31

Andy
----------------------------------------
Dear Friends,

Loggerhead 'Extra' is off the Honduras coast and traveled about 50 km yesterday. She has turned in a southwesterly direction continuing to move over the edge of a very large shallow water area that extends all the way to Nicaragua (and includes the Miskito Cays), which is known to have very good turtle habitat. 'Extra' maybe zeroing in on her "home" feeding grounds now. We will see in the next few days where she settles.

In the meantime, male hawksbill 'Tom' remains near Klein Bonaire.

Robert, safe travel and much success with your work on Mona Island. We'll see you back here in Bonaire in October for the continuation of the tracking program and placement of additional satellite transmitters. Thanks for all your efforts!
