Hello Batty People,

My wife and I are real bat lovers and are going to be in Bonaire for the first time in November. We would really enjoy seeing and learning about the bats and caves of Bonaire. Is there an oganization on Bonaire that would give us a tour of the caves? We are not experienced cavers and wouldn't want to do it on our own.

Thanks,

Wayne

Wayne, I believe that Susan at Bon-Bini Divers is the person to address (see elswhere in Bonaire Talk). She even tried to convince me once to store dead bats in the freezer :-)

Thanks Antonio,

I will talk to Susan. Better to have bats in the freezer than in your belfry... (Sorry, couldn't stop myself) :->

Better late than never to post, but there is a Bat conservation group on Bonaire! I was thrilled to find this out, especially since I live in a West Nile Virus area, I for one am all for building bat houses to help mother nature out in eating mosquitoes. Besides, I am not a real fan of chemicals, & bats are worth more than weight in gold for the amount of mosquitoes they eat:) So glad to see Bonaire taking an interest in building bat houses too!

Hi Wayne

If you ever get a chance go to the Carlsbad Caverns, all I can say is wow. Every evening at dusk the rangers have a show. You sit in a half bowl and watch the bats leave. Since Carlsbad isn't that big it's easiest to fly in to El Paso and rent a car, also plan on spending at least 3 days as there are many caverns.

Where is the best place to watch for bats on the island?

Rose--pretty much anywhere where there isn't a great deal of development, and sometimes they are around even those areas. Sit quietly at dusk, and pretty soon, they'll be flitting around you, or you'll see them exiting their roof-top homes, or other locations at dusk.

Oh, Rose, if you are out at the Lagoen Hill area, you'll see lots of bats. Just drive in a little ways (at dusk or shortly afterward) on any of the dirt roads, and you'll see plenty!
