Sorry all.. just when I thought I was ready for prime time posting, I put up an old picture of Jake from a day or two ago. Gotta get quicker, and more accurate.

Here's the 14:58 capture in big gulp format. Nice bouyancy, but the guy is breathing through his octopus, what a rookie.

someone asked me if this what a diver looks like on the windshield of a submarine?
|
By Cecil Berry on Wednesday, June 6, 2001 - 3:17 pm: |
Try try again, the file was to big and I reduced the size and told it to upload. Didn't happen, got me in a loop with no exit, sounds like my software.

Thanks Linda for the octopus and squid picture link. Carmine, cool pictures of the shark. We saw the cool divers. Was one of the divers a teenager? What type of sharks are in Bonaire? Mrs. Comeau really wants to see a Frog Fish. What are her chances?

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, what is wrong with this software. Where does it reside, down in Mass somewhere, you'd better let it go this time or I'm coming to get you.

See, threads of imminent death always work on software, computers and teenagers.

Gail Currie had told me of a frog fish she found at Bari Reef while she was there, and as we are going in September, I pulled out my reef book over the weekend and was showing my husband the frogfish...as he has been a big "frog fan" since he was a child...and he just had a wierd look on his face!

Jake - This is my 1st time. I've been watching & reading for quite some time. Your 6/4 dive giant tarpon sighting prompted me. When I was in Bonaire 4 yrs ago - stayed @ Sand Dollar - they warned us about 2 giant tarpon they called Charlie & Charline that hung out @ night in front of their place. We saw them on a nite dive. They swam right under me & went forever. They were HUGE - do you think they could the same one you saw? Hope I signed up right & this goes thru.

What do you know - it posted. I saw a frog fish while I was there too. Last dive, last day, frog fish, 2 sea horses & a school of dolphin played with us on the boat trip back. What a wonderful ending to a great trip & place. I'll be back some day.

Diving at night with Charlie the Tarpon is quite the experience! Diving along the reef with my dive buddy/husband on the inside of the Bari reef , I on the outside, when he points to my left.....here was this HUGE SILVER FISH right along side of me ..hunting in my flashlight beam ! Took me by surprise and tried not to go EEEEK ! but found myself on the inside of the reef and kept searching into the blackness for the ""return of Charlie the Tarpon"..that was years ago, and now each year we return and look forward to finding this huge fish still patroling the waters..by the way I am 6 ft tall and I think Charlei is about 5 1/2 ft long. There are also 3-4 snook that follow under you while you are diving there too...they start to be erksome and a bother as they are always in the way, but what beautiful fish at night!

By Walt III on Thursday, June 7, 2001 - 7:11 am: |
You know when I was growing up Charlie was a TUNA. Maybe it was Tommy the Tarpon.
|
By Kelly on Thursday, June 7, 2001 - 8:20 am: |
Walt, we always called that LARGE noctural visitor "Tommy". Sorry Charlie !!!!

OK kids... I have figured out the mystery.. the tarpon that was in front of Sunset was Tommy... the one in front of Sand Dollar was Charlie.(I think the large one in front of Habitat is actually Jack in a new wet suit) ..as far as large nocturnal visitors if tunas.. I call them dinner...ooops don't know how that spear gun got in my hands
|
By Kelly on Thursday, June 7, 2001 - 11:30 am: |
Okay, so now we have Tommy at Sunset, Charlie at Sand Dollar, Jack at Capt Don's, Jay and Walt who hang around the Windjammer. This is getting just a tad "fishy". If you promise to share we won't mention the speargun.. Hmmm, wonder if an old spud launcher might work???

Don't know who's who, but we saw a LAAARGE tarpon our first night, eating dinner at Dock of the Bay

By Jake Richter - NetTech on Thursday, June 7, 2001 - 11:54 am: |
Tarpon are good sport fish (catch & release, using very thin line), but apparently lousy fish for eating (rated inedible or poor in most of the sport fishing guides I have).
|
By Jason on Thursday, June 7, 2001 - 12:11 pm: |
ahh but extremely more edible then Walt or jack

By DARLENE ELLIS on Thursday, June 7, 2001 - 12:19 pm: |
I had my first tarpon encounter doing a night snorkel in front of the Divi Flamingo last February. It was an awesome experience. He was almost as big as I am and he stayed close to our group the whole time! I even got to watch him eat one of the poor little fishes that were in my flash light beam. Renee was our guide and she said he would brush up on her side as he went by! If I had encountered a fish that big last year I think I would have dropped dead, but now I look forward to another encounter. I wonder if anyone has named him yet!
|
By Kelly on Thursday, June 7, 2001 - 12:39 pm: |
Darelene, there are a couple of good size schools of tarpon that cruise the resort using the shore lights (and dive lights) for feeding. Our name the tarpon game is purely for our amusement. On occasions I encounter tarpon I have not been able to distinguish (except for size) one from the other. There are a number that exceed 5 ft., so if you assist a tarpon in his nightly rounds, please feel free to Name That Fish!!!

Jake, an extremely wise choice !!!

and to that tarpon that "spooked" my "hard-to-get-along-with" night dive partner out of the water - thank you
