Do you forsee a time when the webcams will be able to produce real time streaming video?

If bandwidth every becomes cheap on Bonaire, yes. Right now that's our biggest bottleneck.

Although, given unlimited bandwidth and lots of funding, I would think that we'd prefer to go with near real-time feeds of higher quality images (digital camera input instead of video).

So many of us are still on slow dialups, too and the streaming usually stinks with a slow connect - stuttering / stalling / incomplete loading. As a workaround many of the streaming cams also run :30 non-java(?) stills for dialup/AOL/WebTV users. The National Zoo has done this for the Panda cams.
