Anyone here have trouble diving deep prior to open water cert? I'm trying to talk my wife into it and she complains that 5-7ish feet of water her ears start to hurt, she doesn't know if she'll be able to regulate them... ANyone have similar experience?

Hi John,
There are some possibilities.
1. She starts to late with regulating her ears. You should start almost right away when going under with your head. And repeat it while descending a couple of times and descent only when you feel that the pressure is equalized. If you do it to late, than it gets harder and harder to equalize.
2. Maybe she has an smear 'clod'(I don't know if this is the right word for it, because I'm dutch) in her ear and that can be easily removed by a doctor.

And to stay on topic:

John, there is a papiamento thread elsewhere.. I think it is under the local topic..
Your wife should begin to clear her ears even before she gets in the water.. and then clear every few inches if necessary.. she should take her time.. there may be more about this if you do a search of this site.. I would assume that you mean that she is diving deep like in a pool and her ears hurt her or possible snorkling to a shallow depth and NOT actually scuba diving before taking any classes....

Hi everyone and Happy Wednesday Happy hour..

For what it is worth I have had terrible ear problems (eustatian tubes too small and don't equalize easily). I thought I would never be able to dive. I take it slow, and go up a few feet if I can't clear, until I finally do clear. Just stay with her while she clears and be willing to go up and down a few feet in the process.

I'm no expert but I can tell you I have had no problems. Also, I PUT ALCOHOL IN MY EARS BEFORE I DIVE AND IMMEDIATELY AFTER I DIVE. This help evaporate any remaining water. Good luck.

John -

From your post I can't tell if you mean your wife is on SCUBA equipment and having the problems or whether it's simply a during a free dive in the pool. If it's the latter, I can tell you that at 10' my ears are about ready to explode unless I'm breathing compressed air. I didn't think I would be able to dive but the first time I tried it (9 years ago as a 'resort course') we went straight down to about 40' and not so much as a twinge.

Occasionally when diving I've gotten in and had a hard time getting down without pain, but by taking it slow and going feet first I've always been able to pop back up a couple feet until it equalizes and then drop back down.

Good luck, and happy bubbles....

Goodnight everyone!
