Anyone know what's going on with Telbo? It seems like all mail services are blocked, and so is their web site.

Brigitte,

Thanks for the info. At least it's over... But it WAS the longest period of time that they've been messed up since we've been using them.

Pete

Meanwhile you're generating an e-mail to most of the users of this group, numbers in the hundreds, and wasting a lot of time and system resources. Don't worry about your message count. I wouldn't be surprised if your account gets deleted again for spamming us with empty messages.

Deal with your low message count and post something of value.

I am relocating to Bonaire next year, what options are there for high speed internet on the island (at my house or apartment that is, not the various walk in cafes, etc.)? Does Telbo offer DSL, are there any wireless LAN services available or maybe satellite services? Thanks for the help. Jack.

Jack,

Telbo does offer high speed internet. It has been fairly reliable for the most part during the year and a half we've been using it. We have a wireless LAN setup. From talking to others, its reliability apparently varies depending on which tower is used. We use the Hato tower. People using the Rincon tower complain a lot about interruptions; people in Belnem get cut off when a large ship is in port, etc. Installation is expensive (around 500 naf if I remember correctly) and the monthly charge is 105 naf.

The cable company FTV did not have a reliable service when we got here so there was no choice for us. Now, apparently FTV more or less has its act together and many folks are switching to them. I would imagine that they too accomodate wireless users. If you are an FTV cable television customer, the installation rate is a lot less (100 naf I think) than Telbo's and the monthly rate is 95 naf. We haven't switched because we have so much invested in the Telbo installation and are basically satisfied with the service.

Probably neither service is consistently as fast as you may be accustomed to, but it sure beats dial up! And dial up here is very expensive if you are an extensive user.

Jack,
For high speed you've got to use Telbo's wireless system or go with Flamingo TV. But if reliability matters to you, and if you have a laptop with a good battery, you can stay connected to the outside world through electrical outages and any other problems via Telbo's dial up service. It almost always works reliably day or night, and on the rare occasions when problems occur (maybe once a year in my experience) they fix it immediately. I never lost my internet connection during Ivan or any of the electrical outages, but my friends with wireless or FTV had lots of problems.
I've decided reliability matters more to me than speed, but then I'm a writer and must make my deadlines. My editors don't want to hear excuses about the weather or power outages on Bonaire.

And some of us are so dependent on Internet connectivity that we have one of everything: Telbo Wireless, Flamingo TV, leased line, and if all those fail, dial-up. Typically at least one of either Telbo Wireless or Flamingo TV is down or almost unusable due to excess users relative to the amount of allocated bandwidth. Plus, in Belnem, when a big cruise ship comes in, it blocks the wireless relay for Telbo Wireless.

The combined cost of these services would be enough to get me a dedicated T-1 line or two in the U.S. (whereas it gets me a maximum through put of around 576Kbps if all three connections are working at full speed - has never happened in my experience though). I use a load balancing router to balance traffic between the FTV and Telbo Wireless connections, and the leased line is my failsafe reserve for dedicated connections (or large overnight downloads or uploads).

DSL of some sort is apparently in the works, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Jake
