I have read a couple articles regarding theft of stuff left in the vehicle while diving. What do you suggest? Carry everything with you, like car keys, money, room keys, etc, in a water tight box? This will be my first trip to Bonaire.

It is not so bad as it seems, although I would be a lair if I said it doesn't happen.

theft from trucks does happen but not as often as you might think. we've never had anything stolen but we only take just what we need for the dive. we have a waterproof(?) box that i put our keys and Nafl 25.00 in. also, color copies of our drivers licenses, laminated. what gets left in the truck is a ratty tee shirt, cheap flip flops, and my glasses. i make sure to separate the clip on sunglasses from the glasses just in case. also, a small bag of hard candy and a frozen one liter bottle full of water. we have two 2 liter bottles that we use for rinse water and we leave those on the dashboard. we never lock the doors and only roll up the windows on the windward side of the truck or if it looks like it will rain.

I like to use an old Dacor UL 750 Dive Light with battery and bulb removed . It holds as much stuff as i need take for the day , keys , wallet , sunglasses , cell phone , etc. Most containers leak , my trusty UL 750 is rated for 450 feet , if i decide to go deep .

We actually had our truck rummaged through this past trip while we were out on a dive. It was the end of the day at Karpata, nobody else around, very quiet. When we came back the glove box was open and things were not where we left them. However, since there was nothing to take except sunscreen and water, no worries!

I've had my truck rummaged through at Karpata as well. However, on a GOOD note, I left my key in the ignition at Bachelors Beach yesterday and after 1 hour and 16 minutes in the water (and one really cool octopus) I came out to find my truck still there.

We left small things in the truck and never had anything messed with. I used one of these

One quick warning about keys...Many have the electronic sensors and if you get them wet, your car may not start..

We just got back from Bonaire. My girlfriend bailed on diving but forgot to take her gear out of the back of the truck. I ended up doing a couple of dives with the gear behind the seat with no problem...Will not chance it next time
