I am not planning to get a rental car for my 1st trip to BON in May. We are staying at Sorobon and will probably just veg on the beach and snorkel. The airport transfer is taken care of and there is a free shuttle to town(?) for shopping. Am I making a big mistake?

There's no shuttle to town that I'm aware of and yes, IMHO, you are making a mistake in not renting a vehicle.

Welcome to the board.

Sorbon is pretty far from town. Unless you really like to do nothing but hang around the resort, I would suggest you rent a car for at least a couple of days. There are way too many sites to see, beaches to snorkel at and places to eat to be stuck at one place. Someone correct me if I am wrong, but Sorbon is located on Lac Bay and unless I miss my guess, the snorkeling is not going to be nearly as good as many of the ocean sites.

Ask the resort if they offer a free shuttle into town. Maybe they do. There is no public transportation from Sorobon.
You have three snorkeling options at Sorobon:
Walk across the shallow water out to the reef and snorkel on the land side of the reef. Waves break on the other side of the reef.
Snorkel around the jetty where the small boats dock. There you will find shrimp and juvenile lobsters on the pilings.
Snorkel in the shallow (very!) water beyond the small boats along the edge of the mangroves.
All this snorkeling is great, and you will see lots of interesting things. However, if you're a serious snorkeler, you will also want to go to other spots on Bonaire. You could take taxis or rent a car for a part of your stay.

dwayne, i'd recommend a car. being snorkelers, you can get away with a small car instead of a truck. but sorobon is all the way across the island and not close to most of the restaurants or shops. and there are too many other snorkel sites to see...get a car.

I would definitely reccomend getting a car. Sorobon did use to have a shuttle of sorts for grocery shopping but don't know how regular it ran. More than likely you would have to arrange a specific trip and probably would be the only ones using it for any given trip.

Rent a car that's airconditioned for at least a day. Take a self tour of the island. You can easily do it in a day if you don't go into the park up north. They drive on the "right" hand of the road like in the US.You can see the flamingo's and donkey's and see many other interesting sites and stop and snorkel.
There are no traffic lights or freeways on Bonaire and the roads are not crowded and the people are always friendly. Don't miss the many excellent resturants town has to offer too.

If you're a first visitor, you would not be seeing the island out at Lac Bay..Take the advice of people who know.. Get the car.

Agree with all above except re the air conditioning. Our trucks are always AC equipped but I don't remember ever turning it on. We just roll down the windows and enjoy the fresh air and breezes.
