Hello everyone,
Just got off the phone with Continental Airlines. The agent said it would cost me $360.00 to ship my bike from Canada to Bonaire and back, GASP! So I guess I'm going to rent. With quality of mountain bike and knowledgeable staff as guidelines, do you prefer Freewieler or Bonaire Cycle? I'd especially like to hear from folks who have rented from these shops. Thanks to all who read this.

Hi (again) Steve-
I have rented from both places. Mountain bikes only. If you want a road bike, I think de freewieler has those (as well as mtn bikes). I think I prefer de freewieler as they seem to do alot of on-site maintenance of the bikes, a real bike shop. Whereas Cycle Bonaire seems like a dive shop that rents bikes. Last time I checked, df's website was NOT up and running. Check www.infobonaire.com to see if they have it. The ph is 599-717-8545 and his name is Frank.
I still plan on bringing my bike down, but as one of my 2 pieces of luggage. I hope it works, as I cannot afford to pay extra for it! Would your bike be your 3rd piece of luggage? Is that why the $360 charge?? Yikes.

Kate

Pat-
I got a heavy canvas bike bag for $45 from www.nashbar.com and that's what I'm using. It just looks like another piece of luggage, and should be just under the weight limit of 50 lbs. I also don't want to pay for it as an extra piece. If it's my second bag, I shouldn't have to. Wish me luck!

Kate/Pat,
I was also thinking second piece of luggage but Continental said a bike wouldn't qualify as such. And in these days of X-raying all pieces of luggage I'd have to get a lead bag and that would totally blow out my weight limit! Something about having the grace to accept the things you cannot change.

I wanted to do the same in Nov, but after calling AA three times and getting three different answers to bike rules, I chose to rent instead. AA said the destination was what determined the policy. Don't know why. But never felt comfortable enough to wing it.

i'm still hoping to bring my old mountain bike. according to AA they will charge $80 to get it there. i'm planning on leaving it so as long as i can get it as my second piece of luggage, i'll be ok. i went to my local bike shop and got a box from a bike they had just received. hope it makes it...if not, it's not a great loss and i'd look into buying a bike on bonaire.

Ok, I'm going to try to wing it. The bike bag isn't "hard-side", so it just looks like a big bag. I don't start my journey with AA, so I'm hoping to sneak it into the system as my second piece of luggage, starting on Nantucket with Cape Air. The beauty of Cape Air is that I can check all my bags with them right here (they apparently have an agreement with AA) and I don't see them again until Bonaire. Wish me luck! PS- that bike bag is currently on sale at www.nashbar.com for $34.99.

PPS- I opened up that bike bag and took a better look....it's HUGE. Nothing says subtle like a 4'X 3' black bag with 6" gussets. Oh well, if I have to pay the $80, so be it.

kate, are you going to leave the bike there or bring it back? my plan is to leave mine (assuming i get it there to begin with). i'll either lock up the whole thing or at least lock up the wheels and leave the frame up on a shelf in the closet.

Pat, let us know what the final cost of getting the bike to Bonaire is...maybe you will have to make it "Art" like Susan's beach chair...lol

Pat-
I'm definitely leaving it there. Not sure exactly where, as I have no storage shed (yet). I need to work on that!
