Hello,

How long is the trip from one side of the island to another?

Bonaire is a small island, covering roughly 111 square miles, with a width that ranges from 3 to 7 miles and a length of approximately 24 miles. Bonaire is located approximately 50 miles off of the coast of Venezuela.

The above is from the www.Infobonaire.com website.

Depends on how fast you want to go on the southern leg, but you can easily get from one end to the other in an 1- 1-1/2 hours or so on a scooter.

Island time means a lot of visitors throw their watches in their luggage when they arrive and go with the flow. lol

Natalya, the drive from one end to the other (not going through the park) or from West to East and back is a good surface interval time :-)

natalya, we live at lighthouse beach resort, south of town. we can get to lac bay and sorobon in less than 10 minutes...that's going from west to east on kaya van epps. i would guess that to get from willemstoren lighthouse, all the way south, to bopec north of town, would take a little over 30 minutes. keep in mind that once you get north of 1000 steps, the road becomes one way and you have to get back to town via rincon.

bonaire is bigger than aruba but no place is very far away.

As you will see from the maps, going all the way to the northern end through Washington-Slagbaai Park is not a 'straight drive'. Not quite 'off road' but definitely better in a 4-wheel drive vehicle, taking your time.

Personal experience.... drove all the way up to Boca Bartol (north end in the park) because we had heard that the surf was particularly calm there that morning. When we got there it most decidedly was NOT. Got back in the truck realizing that meant that most likely the south end would be pretty calm. We made it all the way to Red Slave in about 45 minutes.

Yes, we drive a little faster than we should have getting out of the park, but it was dead calm from Red Slave all the way down to the very southern tip at the lighthouse. The roads on the east side of the island seemed to be a little quicker for us that time.

Randy also pointed out that most people toss the watches in the luggage when they get there. That is an excellent bit of advice. :-)

Michael

If you want to make an interesting tourist trip, take one (full) day for the Washington park, (entrance fee), and another full day for "the rest", which means the toeristenweg, Goto-meer, Rincon, the Indian Inscriptions, the salt company, slave huts, Willemstoren, Sorobon, LacCai, Lagun lighthouse. This second trip could be done in two half-days, because it is half-north- and half-south-way. You will have all the time to stop, and enjoy the views, make pictures, eventually take a snorkel or swim somewhere (not on the rough side). And then of course you missed our shopping-street, and the populated areas, but both of them are not very interesting (although we as Bonairians are very happy with the shopping-possibilities.....)

Enjoy Bonaire!

Harrie
