If you've hung out at Bonaire Talk for long, you've seen many queries from BT'ers asking

  • Where are the grocery stores?
  • How do I get to Sand Dollar, Habitat, etc?
  • How do I contact ...?
  • Does ... have a web site?
  • and so on...
For that matter, some residents may not know the answers!

Blennylips Bonaire Map might be part of the answer and we need your help.

If you are familiar with Google Maps then you know your way around our map. If you are new to Google maps, take a tour to learn how to zoom, pan, use keyboard shortcuts, etc.

Bear in mind that our map is more a proof-of-concept than anything else ... so far. But it is fun to play with!

The map page is divided into three sections:
  • Across the top contains controls to select waypoints (points-of-interest) and tracks (i.e. routes) to display on the map.
  • Below that is the map. Click on one of the markers in the map to see a popup window with details for that location.
  • Down the right edge of the map is a list of the waypoints and route selected and shown in the map. You can click on one of these waypoint symbols to have the map pan to that location and open the information popup window.

Caveat: Displaying tracks does not work (yet) in Internet Explorer. It can be done, but I've not figured it out yet.

I've verified that it works with Firefox and Safari. If you have a report that it does or does not work with another browser, please contact me.

If you are on Windows, and still using IE, you owe it to your self to get and install Firefox, IMHO a far superior and more secure browser.

Now, an example of what I have in mind.

Go to the map page and select "Residences" from the waypoint list and click "Display". Then,
either click on the marker on the map, or the marker in the right hand column. An info window pops up showing a picture, a link for more information and a link to send an email message.

What's left to do:
  • The "Dive Site" list is not complete, nothing for Klein yet. At a minimum I need GPS coordinates and a name.
  • We need photos for most of the existing points-of-interest.
  • Need to fill in all the categories. More restaurant, stores, etc.
  • Residents are free to add a point for their own home.
  • Write scripts to generate GPS compatible files for download. Never get lost on Bonaire again!
  • Get a complete set of GPS tracks for Bonaire roads and figure out a scheme for display. Maybe a track from some single central location out to every point-of-interest.
  • Your ideas for improvement...

Specifically, to contribute, we need from you
  • Name and GPS coordinates in WGS 84 Datum formated as decimal degrees.
  • A photo for each point-of-interest, high quality jpeg 128x96.
  • A url for more information about this point.
  • An email address for the point (if applicable).

Note Bene:
I'm still mulling this over, but I reserve the right to charge businesses a small fee for the placement of a custom photo and information links. If I have your GPS coordinates, that and your name will always go on the map, independent of any fees I may charge. This may not be compatible with Google's Terms Of Service, so we'll see.

Check back regularly at the Blennylips Bonaire Map Project for changes and updates.

Ok, the map is very cool.... but I confess I didn't spend much time there. I chose Residences, clicked on more info on Casa Flamingo, and just got a great Bonaire fix looking at your slide show. Thanks for the mind trip!
