Are there many restaurants that are within walking distance of the Divi?
How about a grocery store would that be an ok walk with just a couple of bags of groceries?

When you check into the Divi, ask for a key to the North Gate. Use this gate to walk into town. It is a very nice, safe and reasonably well-lit walk along the shore. Within a few blocks of the Divi are several good places to eat, many of them right along this walkway/road.

For breakfast, I'd recommend City Cafe, also along this road.

There are three 'supermarkets' to buy food within walking distance. Ask as the main desk and ask for hours of operation. We prefer Warehouse supermarket, which is about 3 block away - an easy walk.

Do take the time to walk into town and look around some afternoon or morning. Then plan your evening dinners based on your scouting. Also consider renting a car, even if only for a day, and explore the island.

Donna & Gorgio's is a short walk on the prominaide to town and is always the first resturant we visit.
Catus Blue and the Argentinain Bar-B-Q are on the "inside" road to town.
Mona Lisa in the middle of town is a favorite too.Great "bar hop" menue.
Richards is a short walk south(the other way).
Town is not a far walk from Divi and there are many new resturants too.
Lots of favorites from this group.

Walking with groceries from town can be a bit too hot during the day. I did once and know I won't do that again.
There is small shop with some things at the Divi.
Soda, snacks and ice cream, T-shirts like that.
Yokes market is close but is very small(I really mean small) and is limited. You can get soda, beer, liquore(good prices) and bread and eggs and limited amount of cheese and things sometimes, but if you really want to get groceries for the apt. like bread and cold cuts and meats, and a larger selection, go to one of the larger places(Cultimare or Warehouse or some of the others) either rent a car or take a cab. Or walk to cultimare and take a cab back.
I think it is a bit too far to carry things.
Also don't forget to bring a bag to carry the groceries, like the cheap ones at the $ stores here or a canvas beach bag. They do charge a minimal fee,.25 I think, but more important is to keep those plastic bags out of the garbage dump.

Jennifer, I just returned yesterday from my visit to Divi. We found that the Warehouse had the best overall selections for food and bakery. It is 3 blocks East of Divi and an easy walk. If you have heavy stuff a cab back is also easy. For produce go through the North gate and walk to the Venezulea produce market across from City Cafe. They have fresh fruit and vegetables at a very reasonable price. Eat breakfast at the Calabas on the Divi property or walk to City Cafe. Also, Last Bite Bakery is great.

For restaurants most were named and all are a very short walk. We really liked Donna & Georgios, Salsa, and City Cafe. Richards has been a favorite of ours for almost 15 years and is on our must list.

The mini-market on Divi property is closed.

Hi, George,

Do you know why the mini market at the Divi is closed? Wasn't that Lutti's (sp?) place? It was always so handy and had neat items other than snacks, etc. Carole

Carole,

Yes, Lutti has closed both of his stores. Sad news indeed.... I believe he is still being a DM at Divi.
I will miss him there. :-(

Don't forget about La Flambouyant in town. They are open for lunch and dinner (late lunch too). Great French Onion Soup, quiche, filets, etc. It is one of our favorites. Also, Capriccio's in town.

A LONG 3 blocks, and I would not want to carry groceries bags back in that heat so the cab is a good idea:-) Warehouse does not provide bags, you have to use the boxes that food comes packed in, so bring your own bags if you walk.

Cynde, you are correct about the Warehouse. However, I believe it is closer or at least as close as Cultimara and it is a nicer store. The fresh rolls are excellent and they have the best cheese and meat selection.

George...you're right about proximity to Cultimara...you have to remember that I am "heat intolerant" so three LONG blocks for me would put me in heat exhaustion...lol...people think I'm joking about my heat intolerance, but I just got back and 2 days I had to take a cold shower in the morning, and then douse myself with water before I got in the truck...and it's January...locals were wearing long sleeves!

FYI...The warehouse does have good large plastic bags, with handles and they charge 25 cents for them.

Buy your grocery bag at the Donkey Sang. (cloth with handles) and pack it every trip like my wife did... Ron
