I just read in the BR that there is an alcohol curfew Friday and that only tourists will be served alcohol Friday in their hotel rooms during elections. May I ask why and was this rule instituted in the last election? Why do I not recall this? No matter to me but curious...thanks..

No, Ann, this is an old rule. Been around for some time. Maybe you've been off island on election day in previous years? Or not thirsty?

Elections are Friday, 1/27. We are not allowed to sell alcohol from 6pm Thursday until 7 or 8am Saturday morning (we don't open till 11am, so I'm not exactly sure of the morning hour). It's been this way as long as I've been here, and I believe it is an attempt to stop alcohol fueled political arguments/fights breaking out in public (and maybe an attempt to halt Friday hangovers that may hinder people from voting).

When I used to live in Connecticut, alcohol sales were banned on the day of national elections until after the polls closed. I don't know if that's still the case, but it sure isn't that way in Florida!

OK Gail, I thought about saying something about Chads...but I won't...lol!

In Arizona, you can't buy alcohol from midnight saturday night till noon on Sunday. I think it's that way in New Mexico as well. Even in the bars and restaruants...

in Bergen County NJ ALL retailers are closed on Sundays. You can't buy bread, milk or beer...

I went to college in CT and you couldn't buy alcohol on Sundays to consume off-premises. I still think the package stores are still closed on Sundays, but I'm not sure if you can buy beer or wine in the grocery stores.

in ohio, i remember when the bars were closed on election day. i think its intent was to stop candidates from getting voters drunk and influencing their vote (however, if you see the clowns running this state now you'd agree that the drunks could have done better). we do sell beer and wine in our area seven days a week but no liquor on sundays.

This was an very interesting experience for us ..... islanders we spoke with laughed at the 'law' indicating that people stock up ahead of time and get on with their life as usual ... that was the day we bought a few supplies at Cultimara and discovered that tourists were not able to buy any alcohol either ... we survived :o)

perhaps if we forbid alcohol sales in the us on election day then maybe we would have better outcomes!
