Our school is located in Georgia and is named Bonaire Elementary. We have been picked by the island of Bonaire as a sister school. They are coming to visit us next week. I would like information about the people, climate, industry, etc. I have visited the website and seen the webcams. Is tourism their only industry? Tell me what you can. I hope we get to visit. It sounds like a dream.

Our other major industries are:

Oil transshipment (Bopec) shallow hull ships from Venezuela off load crude oil and deep ocean going tankers take the oil away.

Rice processing (American Blue Ribbon and others) Rice grown in Surinam is processed here before being sent to the States.

Salt (Cargill) Large salt pans (salinas) in the south are used to produce high quality salt from sea water by evaporation.

The www.infobonaire.com site will give you a lot of information about Bonaire. So will looking through this BonaireTalk site.

Many of us are addicted to Bonaire, and plan our next visit before we go home from the current one. It's a lovely, friendly, peaceful island, with wonderful people, beautiful countryside, and the underwater world is very well-protected and beautiful.
