Hello all!
We just got home from Bonaire and visited the Donkey Sanctuary as we usually do when on island.
It is always a pleasure to talk with Marina as she is one of the most caring people I have come across in my life. Her dedication and hard work are astounding.
We were informed that the sanctuary will be losing alot of land and they have to acquire another parcel and rebuild most of the front of the sanctuary. All this has to be done within this year...(October 1, 2009 being the deadline)
The donkey's that are still loose and not within Marina's protective walls will be shot.
I was very upset to hear this and going to do my best in helping out. I know we have a few "missions" going on on the island at this time and what to support both.
Please email me if this is where I should post this or if others would like to start some type of collection for this cause. I was thinking of putting cans in the local dive shops by us as I know they have visited the island many times.
One year is not such a long time...but miracles can happen....
Do they have a "Move that Bus" on Bonaire? :-)

That was I WANT to support both of them! The other being the waste issue......
Anyway....any suggestions or ideas would be great...

Meryl,
Thanks for posting this. Is there more information on the who, what, when and why's? Anything on their web site?
I'd like to learn more & sure others would too. Very disturbing about the handling of the "still in the wild" donkeys.

Well, I talked to Marina yesterday and I took a brochure of the sanctuary's boundery to date. I am going to try to scan and post what area's of the sanctuary will be taken and where she plans to rebuild. The "new" area is going to need a tall fence as it borders a road.
I told Marina I was going to post as soon as I got home so I hope she can give us better detail as to the particulars.
"Unofficially, off the record, and via my mouth"
I heard they will need about 60,000 EU (which I still don't know how to convert to dollars).
From what I gather the airport is expanding and the parcel of land that is now the enterance to the sanctuary will be airport property or government property?
I am hoping Marina will post or at least email some of us so we know the whole story.
Mod's...not sure if this is the place to post this or not. Once we find out the Official info it would be good to have this on a site more frequented by people who would contribute.
I know for sure that the deadline is Oct 2009.
As to the "still wild donkey" info...I know what I heard...
Personally I think it would be better to approach this issue asap as the need to secure this sanctuary will help to bring in the rest of the fold.
baby
