Hi,
I'm trying to plan a trip to Bonaire (first time). Sailed at Margarite and loved the set up (stayed on beach, equipment rental right there)... anything like that at Bonaire? Also, when is the best time to go? Is it crazy busy in Feb? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hi Nancy, welcome to BT :)

High season is Nov to Apr (peak is Jan to Feb) this is also when the cruise ships stop by.

most likely time for no or low winds is Aug to Oct, but if I recall, the last 12 months have only had about 10 non windy days.

there's two set ups right there at Lac Bay

1. Jibe City

http://www.jibecity.com/index.html

2. Windsurfplace

http://www.bonairewindsurfplace.com/index.html

the owners of Jibe City purchased the Sorobon beach resort last year (right next door to Jibe City, which used to be a solely nudist resort) and are converting it into a place for windsurfers to stay 'on the beach'

http://www.sorobonbeach.com/p/20/732/new-owners-sorobon-beach-resort

My first trip was last year in May and I can't wait to go back!!

Enjoy :)

have a check on www.kontikibonaire.com for info and accommodation on Lac Bay side of the island as well. Miriam and Martin (from Kontiki) are two of the nicest people you could want to meet and Martin was one of the first to windsurf Lac Bay in the 1980s. Although he has lapsed recently !

sunrise from Kontiki

I agree a lovely place and would recommend it whole heartedly :)

Hah ! The Orange Villa to the left of your view off shot(No1 Lac Bay) is by pure luck - "ours".... I just spent weeks re-making the photo-gallery on our website if you fancy having a look (general island pics not advert pics by the way) www.lacbayvilla.com

Any feedback on the gallery would be useful - i.e. things that don't work properly. Carole is the fotographer - I am just the techie.

The new Gallery is working perfectly for me Trevor, some great Windsurf action and wildlife pics in there, actually they are all great pics loved them all.

I've also just looked thru my trip pics again and could only find one with your place in the background....

The Jeep

oh my that jeep was an adventure in itself (think Indiana Jones films !! ) but it was a good one that gave us many smiles :):)

Of course if I ever manage to convince enough of my friends to come to Bonaire with me your place at No1 Lac Bay would be our first choice ;)

Nice one. Looks like you had a decent jeep. Mind u I can only see three wheels and even with a spare, did you get a jack LOL. See you on the beach. We are the family with matching sails and boards; Naish Gold/Black Redlines and iSonic 76/86/96 (#2 son doesn't like cambers)

Nancy,Lac Bay is flat water heaven.....spent three weeks there this past Febuary.I would say it is not overly busy compared to other windsurfing place.I've made trips to Cabarete,DR and Hatteras, and they are busy, alot of sailors and kiters. No kiters on Lac Bay.
We had great wind in February and plan to return same time next year. Its only crowded on the water when the cruise people show up and thats only in a small area....they line up and stand around in the water for hours??Oh, well, to each his own...whatever.We had no shortage of rental gear to meet our needs.New JP boards arrived at Jibe City while we were there.

If you want to stay close to windsurfing, stay at Kontiki. We were there for 5 days of our trip and really enjoyed it.Very laid back, great food.

Hey Trevor, great pics, can't wait to be back in Bonaire.

Rudy - Thanks for the compliments on the pics

Nancy
I have been windsurfing since 1979 and am considered "experienced" in that I can fall in properly now.... Having sailed and raced in some of the best publicised locations in Europe and several others around the planet Lac Bay is a paradise. You fall in, you stand up, you turn around and you set off again. Because of the constancy of the sailing arena you can improve very quickly in a very short time. And if you can already sail then it is simply heaven to set off from the beach straight on the plane, hook in, slip in to the straps and head off to the other side of the bay jibing when you run out of strength on that side of the body !!!

Thanks everyone for the wonderful advice!! I have checked out the photo gallery on the website and it looks fantastic!! I think that is where we will stay. I'm checking with the gang and it looks like the only time we can go is either the first week in April or the first week in May... how long do I have to make the reservations? Do accommodations book up fast? It will be difficult to get financial commitments this early. More advice please!
:-)

Last time I checked, Jeep doesn't start with SUZ. :) (Couldn't resist, since I'm a jeeper myself.)
