slug The Slugs Return From Capistrano Day

It’s a little known secret that slimy slugs spend their winters in lovely Capistrano, and return to our patios and gardens on this date. How so? "When the swallows return to Capistrano, the slugs bail out. Got it?"

barefeet Bare feet are not a good idea.

It's...

Kite Flying Day

It's hard to guess who flew the first kites. But, we can date kites as far back as 3000 years ago in China - they were made from bamboo and silk and were first used by the military. Over the centuries, kites have been reproduced around the world for many different reason. They took on mystical and religious meaning in most of Asia and were used in scientific experiments in the US (remember Ben Franklin). Most of all, they have provided endless hours of outdoor fun. anything

anything anything anything

Whichever one I choose, it will fit exactly into the space that I have. Annie B.

rusty, funny you should mention the swallows. when i went to the festival this spring, i only saw a couple of swallow nests. seems that they hang out at the college! just outside our classroom there is an overhang archway, and there were literally about a hundred mud dabber nests! just about at sunset, they would fly and squack like crazy, in HUGE groups...looked like something out of the movie the birds!

Only one huge problem...I'VE GOT THE DREAD "ITCIE-ITCHY". All over my upper torso. I'm soooo miserable. How long does this last? What can I do besides calydril, oatmeal baths, cortisone cream?

itchy Whoo, poor baby! Aloe? Have any aloe vera plants around the house, it works wonders on itchy skin. Glad you're back safe and sound, Margarita! Wassup with the itch, though?

poison When Dadz and I spent a couple hours doing a little nature walk I noticed that the poison ivy is popping up everywhere. It was a foot tall and voer my head in places where it crawled up trees as a thick, hairy vine. You have to be on the lookout here for those shiny red/green leaves of three.

Margarite. Do you have Calamine Lotion over there. It is very cooling and soothing. You just dab it all over the area, but the only problem is that it dries sort of pinky. Annie B.

What a weekend spent had to get a cherry picker lift to finish paint the second floor house trim, mowed, rototilled the garden, built an 8x8 gabled roofed garden shed, mowed some more, fixed some horse fence. Didn't bother me so much when I was younger.
Anne B after having brick, metal, charcoal & gas bbq's the one that I ALWAYS go back to is a brick lined Japanese Habachi habachi smoker. I don't know if you can get one there, but here in the states http://www.biggreenegg.com/home.shtml makes them. Greatest thing since smoked meat!!
Margarite: I don't know if it will help but for no-see-um bites and some types of heat rash if you rub antiperspirant on the area it stops itching.. Really saved me last month in Mexico.

Thanks for the link Clint. I've been picking up lot of hints and tips from different sites regarding sauces etc. Poor Trev's back couldn't stand the strain of building a brick one, anything so a ready to assemble one it's gonna be. He just ran over the electric cable with the lawn mower, got a huge bolt, but he is ok. anything I have resigned him to painting the garden fence instead. paint

Margarite, Benydril (sp) is what you want, but here's the best info on this condition, Doc V on SBE.

Rusty the funny part is that's was not even my favorite slug joke.

The other night i was watching TV and the doorbell rang. I went to the door and there was no one there just a slug. I picked it up and threw in into the yard.

A year and half later, the doorbell rang again and once again there was a slug at the door and he said to me. What the hell was that all about!

THAT'S EXACTLY what I got in PV, on tops of my feet and calves. After trying tons of different salves I put some DEGREE antiperspirant on the areas, figured if it worked on sandflea bites, (THE WORST)it couldn't hurt on the rash. And it WORKED, they dried out and stopped itching. I know this sounds really wild but something in the aluminium something something that stops the sweat messages stops the itch messages. If it don't work I'll go and mow somemore grass...

More Info Than YOU Want TO Know!
Cynde, don't get taken in on some new fangled 'urban legand'! I know around here HASMAT teams are setup to take any MC infected animals. They have to be burned at some ungodly temp. If I remember right, it is like twice what creamatoriums fire at. Then the ashes have to be mixed with concrete and buried. I am sure that Canada also takes the whole thing seriously. Another thing is that most canned dog food is made from live, unbutcherable cows & pigs(old, lame, prolapsed, etc). Horses are not used very often because they are harder to come by and thus more expensive. Most added protein in dry and canned is foul by-products(feathers, bones, feet & beaks) or soy. Dead animals go to the renderers.
So even if the deseased cow went to the renderer and the bone meal was used in dog food, JUST DON'T EAT YOUR DOG! (no grendel BBQ'ing!!!)

clint, actually the story isn't an urban legand...it is a very valid and true story. The FDA is investigating the product from the manufacturer in Nevada who sold it. Dogs can't get mad cow however, and they are afraid that the dog food may have been mixed with other animal feed...Mad Cow Dog Food Recalled

I know here in the States and I think Canada, when GB had the big MC out break, it became illegal to sell for feed or feed to livestock any bonemeal and or other animal byproducts. I have not been able to find out, but let's hope that the infected cow was one of the last imported from GB, just before the quarantine. Since the incubation period is 5-8 years it may now have not even been showing any physical signs yet. 5-8 years is old for most US livestock, and probably why the cow in Canada was headed for the dogfood packers. But again, if it were alive it would have normally been butchered and used for canned food. Makes me want to go HUUUMMMM!
As for the warnings you must really love your cow to feed it expensive dog food. Your goat maybe, but a cow, Na. I find it interesting that it took as long as it did to find the cow was positive and then by the USDA. But as for me and my house no more Grendal-B-Q's.
