Today there is going to be, so it seems, a lunar eclipse. I got the following from a BBCi
moon
During a lunar eclipse, the Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the Sun’s light. We see the Earth’s shadow creep across the surface of the Moon.

Lunar eclipses are not as spectacular as Solar eclipses, when day turns to night. However, they last for much longer, and can be seen from any part of the Earth’s surface where the Moon is above the horizon.

They require no equipment to view, and are perfect events for beginners to observe.

Anaother site tells me: Make sure you've got nothing planned on the evening of Thursday, May 15 and join Universe Today as we watch a total eclipse of the Moon. This will be the first lunar eclipse visible to North America in a few years so it should be quite a show. Assuming the weather's nice here in Vancouver (aka Raincouver), I'll try to broadcast live pictures of the eclipse once the Moon rises - after the eclipse has already started, unfortunately.

But even if I can't catch them, I'll put links to all the astrocameras I can dig up and post live reports of which ones to watch at any point. If you're going to be running a camera, please let me know (fraser@universetoday.com) and I'll add you to my list.

If you want to watch it live, here's a list of local times:

Place Eclipse Begins Total Eclipse Eclipse Ends
Pacific (PDT) 19:03 20:40 22:18
Mountain (MDT) 20:03 21:40 23:18

Jenni, the eclipse should be pretty cool. It'll probably be cloudy tonight, we'll see. We're shuffling off to Buffalo, NY today. I'll wave at Rusty when we go by Springfield, Ma. My sister-in-law is graduating tomorrow. I'll be in and out all weekend, so everyone place nice and I'll be back in full force next Monday evening.

wave Welcome back, Jenni. We missed you. Bummer that you forgot your cute little Fuji (right?) camera back there. It's so little I don't think it's even weaned yet. LOL I have a case of camera-envy for that gadget.

wave Cecil! Think of me when you pass the giant red, white and blue basketball. That sucker is HUGE!

moon Okay, Wusty was (is?) a nerd. I belonged to the Junior Springfield Stars Club when I was a kid and my Dad and I would try to catch the celestial events like the Perseids, et cetera. One night I reminded my Dadz that it was lunar eclipse night and that he should wake me in time for it. (I imagined it would last about four minutes like a solar eclipse.)

moon2 Well, he got me up and there was tiny slice of moon missing. Yawn. Back to bed. He woke me again and there was another half-inch of moon missing. Yawn. Back to bed. Next time he showed up I wailed, "No more eclipse, please!" So he carried me out. LOL Yawn. (He worked nights on the railroad so this was no big deal for him being up at dark of night.) Back to bed. When he got me up for the totality it looked an awful lot like NOTHING to me but I saw it, whether I liked it or not. :-)

And I'm still grateful for that memory.

market I gotta go run some errands and grab a good Buy 1 Get 2 Free sale at the supermarket. Stuff like salad mixes, sugar and ham steaks make it worthwhile to run out there.

brain Hey, Know-It-Alls...

Anyone recognize this pathetic attempt at a fish? It was in a salt tank at Debbie Wong's yesterday.

Hiya Rusty hi

Yeh I have vague memories of seeing a lunar eclipse with a very early boyfriend, and we got up in the middle of the night, and I tried my best to get excited even though it didn;t seem *that* exciting at the time. moonAnd, again, I am very glad to have that memory!

Some years back I went to France to see a solar eclipse. Now that was exciting. Exciting plus 3 stars at the very least.

And, no, I don't recognise that fish.
fish

Did you eat it? Or were they fishes to look at, not pick out for eating?

I have arranged for it to be sent Special Delivery and I should get it tomorrow. I will feel a lot happier when it is back in my hands.

Cecil, have a good time at the Graduation. Shame you weren't passing when I was there.

wave Hi Honey, I'm home! Friendly's Ice Cream was Buy 1 Get 1 Free. How could I resist? Mint Chocolate Chip and something called Peanut Butter Chocolate Sundae or something. Got cones so I can control my portions. LOL

fish Do help me here, if you can. The folks across the street came home from their first fishing trip of the season this afternoon and gifted us with two trout. The heads and viscera are still intact. So now what do I do if we want to eat/grill them? Or should I just bury them under a rosebush?

Hi Rusty. Oh cook them, they'll be delicious. Leave the heads on, that bit I know for sure. Viscera? Is that the insides? Leave them intact. I've cooked them that way and they are delicious.

rusty, get out a sharp knife. cut the head off, and take the knife and make a cut on the underbelly from end to end...pull out the "vicera" and then you can fillet it, or cook it with da bones:-) i was raised fishing...and as my dad used to say "you catch em' you clean em'!"

although sadly, since i began diving, i can't bear to fish anymore...like looking them in the eye and giving them the death sentence. i will eat it once it is prepared, but don't ask me to catch them anymore:-(

Rusty, this is probably way too late, but leave the heads on, start at the vent with a very sharp, thin knife, insert knife into the vent backwards, i.e, as if you were cutting a folded piece of wrapping paper. Slit up the belly to the collar bone. Open him up, remove the guts and the blood vein that you will find lying against the backbone. Rinse the inside well. Dip in egg mixed with a bit of milk, roll in corn meal, fry in a fair amount of oil--olive, preferred. Feast and enjoy!

Jenni, I'm confused. You mentioned that you are in Vancouver, but your profile says Manchester????

NE

Especially considering that yesterday there was a lot of snow mixed in with the rain, and the snow level was down to about 1,200 feet on the mountain side!

Linnea - you had your thinking cap on. Thank you, you got that fishy right on the nose. It's a Pacific fish - so I didn't have a clue or a book to look it up in.

flame

My silly drawing came pretty close to the real thing. First time that's ever happened.

moon Love the eclipse shot, Freddie. BoxerBob let the dogs out just before he came to bed and said the moon looked really "Addams Family-ish" with clouds passing by the eclipse. I was too warm and sleepy to get up and look. (No! No more eclipse! LOL) (My Dadz reminded me that the eclipse he and I saw was in January and it was COLD. He had me wrapped in every blanket in my room. No wonder I wanted to go back to bed.)

trout I didn't tackle the trout last night. I was waiting for help, I kept them on ice in the fridge. So I don't take out the bones? Okay!? We'll grill them today and I'll let you know how it goes. Thank you!!

Hi everyone!

I stayed up till 12.30pm to watch it... and shoot it! I'm going to post a series of it on our website this weekend. Will let you know when it's up!
(By the way, the article in Bonaire Reporter was spot on... orange/yellow color, Scorpio clearly to be seen... it was great!)

Jenni, regarding my confusion. on our 5/15 8:11 a.m. post, you wrote, "Assuming the weather's nice here in Vancouver (aka Raincouver)." Because you said "here," I assumed you meant you were in Vancouver.
