It's...

Quilt Lovers Day

Quilting is sewing two layers of fabric together with filling in the middle. It originated in ancient times when people wore quilted garments for warmth and protection. Written records of bed quilts date back to the 12th century, and a quilt survives from the 1400's in England. The first quilts in the U.S. were appliqued by early colonists, but it was the patchwork quilt that became the most popular form of quilting in America. 1a

I've been thinking of what I've heard Americans call some quilts, and I've just remembered. Afghans. I think they are crocheted when they call them an Afghan. I have absolutely no idea why.

morning jenni and annie! jenni, my mother and grandmother make(made) afgans. i have about 4 from my grandmother, along with about 5 hand made quilts. she had this quilting rack that she would set up in her living room and would stretch the material out to quilt. it took up the hole room! interesting question as to the origin of the afgan. what do they call them on your side of the pond?

annie, glad you are feeling a bit better. I will check the info for you when i get to work this morning. going in early as i have to take geeze to her dermatology vet apt this afternoon (dang dust mites)! you would think with only 1 couch and no carpet, and constant spraying, she would be fine. she is having a horrible attack this time. poor thing!

we don't have much grass on the dog run. we had her tested last fall, and the 2 things that came back highly allergic were BOTH types of dust mites! argh! so i spray the couch once a week with this dust mite allergy spray, and i have the mattresses covered with allergy covers that zip, to include the pillows. wash the dog beds every week...we don't have any carpet, just re-tiled the house last year! i have a feeling that he may put her on shots this time:-( but anything is better than these horrible outbreaks...poor thing!

Hi Cynde - We don't have a special name for them, as far as I know. I call them blankets. Your poor doggy. How awful!

Yeh, Annie, it is easy to forget where I am for me too when I am on here.

My friend Marty is coming to collect me today. He is an old friend and we are going for a walk and hanging out and having lunch. I haven't seen him for 5 years so a lot of catching up to do.

Keep fighting them there bugs Rusty

love to you all

Just thought I'd share my favorite recipe today. If you like horseradish, you will love this!

Horseradish Steak Recipe

2 medium sized filet mignon
2 T olive oil
2 T Dijon mustard
1 T chopped garlic
½ c freshly grated horseradish root
salt and pepper to taste
Emeril’s Creole Seasoning (see below)

(you can now buy Emeril's seasoning already made up)

Rub olive oil into steaks, then rub in Creole seasoning (both sides). Sear steaks in a very hot skillet for approx. 2 min. each side.

Place steaks on a baking rack over a cooking pan so that steak isn’t lying directly on the bottom of dish. Rub in Dijon mustard, garlic, salt and pepper on tops of steak only. Add the grated horseradish to the tops of the steaks and bake at 375-400 degrees for approx. 35-40 min. for med. rare. Time will vary depending on thickness of steaks.

Emeril’s Creole Seasoning
· 2 1/2 tablespoons paprika
· 2 tablespoons salt
· 2 tablespoons garlic powder
· 1 tablespoon onion powder
· 1 tablespoon black pepper
· 1 tablespoon cayenne pepper
· 1 tablespoon dried leaf oregano
· 1 tablespoon dried leaf thyme
Combine all ingredients thoroughly and store in an airtight container. Makes about 2/3 cup.

Hi everyone

Get a good rest Annie. I had smiles with your confusions, so no harm done here

Had a super day, walking round the reservoir with my old friend Marty, and then superb lumch at a place called 'Apricots' and then on to Lyman Orchards, and then back home.

Sun lasted during the walk and then got a bit windy and almost rained, and now the sun is back out.

Going to dinner with another very close friend tonight, Fred. He was over in the UK last August and helped me move to my new therapy rooms.

And then I am away for 2 days. One with Rusty, and staying overnight in Springfield and then down to NOrwich to be with my dear friend Barbara, and going to the casino for dinner on Thrusday night, and then back here Friday morning to pack and get ready to leave.

I am SOOOOoooooo excited about seeing Rusty and her Dadz. I have my digital camera with me and will get some pics up for you all as soon as I get back and figure out how to do the camera transfers/

And on the subject of quilts.....my maternal Grandmother was a quilter. All the kids and grandkids have one of her quilts. She made them from scrap fabrics that she got free from the factory that she and my Aunt Tilly , her sister, worked at as seamstresses. The quilts themselves are not any fancy design, but are basic and practical. Quilts often reflect the personality of the quilter. I found some for you guys....

Here's one I think Annie would like....
p
And here's one for poor sick Rusty...
u

In her last years, my grandmother would often accidentally sew her thimbles into the quilt. And sometimes she would sew pins in there!! I remember her fondly everytime I roll over onto a pin!

Margartie. I still haven't found the origin of the Afghan. I am probably barking up the wrong tree here, but that's nothing new. LOL.
