Ferris Wheel Day fair

The first Ferris Wheel was the highlight of the1893 World's Fair. It was created by Pittsburgh, PA bridge builder, George W. Ferris. Supported by two 140 foot steel towers, its 45 foot axle was the largest single piece of forged steel in the world at the time. The wheel itself was 264 feet high. It had 36 wooden cars that could each hold 60 people. It cost 50 cents per ride - a high price in 1893.

Mr. Ferris was a graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, NY. Amusing bit of trivia.

Jake, Linda, Faith and I all met at RPI.

cheerleader Dan, my Dad always felt sorry for the cheerleaders at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute...

Gimme an *R*!

Rusty, there's a song that the RPI Glee Club sings that, throughout the song, continually spells out the name Rensselaer. The first time I saw them do it live, they started out with the first line, and when they got to where they spell out the first half -- "R-E-N-S-S" -- they all came out with different letters! They stopped, stared at each other, then shrugged and carried on with the second line. When they got to the end of the second line -- "E L A E R" -- they again came out with a jumble of different letters! By now we were all laughing hysterically. They huddled together, looking very concerned -- then one of them pointed up to the Rensselaer banner on the wall, whereupon they all brightened up and started up again. Start in on the first line, and when they get to the "R E N S S", they all break off from looking out at the audience and whip around to where the banner is and read off the letters from there. Same thing with the second line. It was a riot!

And we used to occasionally do a cheer at the hockey games, where one of the guys in our section would start out with "Gimme an *R*!", and go through and have us yell out every letter in Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. When he got to the final "What does it spell?" we'd all yell out "TUTE!"

We also occasionally referred to the place as Rensselpoly Institechnitute or Rensseltute Polyensselaer Institechnic.

I think this was part of why the place was always known as RPI -- engineers can't spell... :-) I feel sorry for the current crop of students -- the place has stopped referring to itself as RPI and started insisting on Rensselaer...

Faith
