Scotch Tape Day banjo

In 1921, a banjo playing inventor went to work for the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company, known as 3M. Four years later, Richard Drew walked out of his lab carrying the first roll of scotch tape. In 1930, he also created cellophane tape. Without this man, we'd still be wrapping up our Christmas packages with rope. Way to go, Dick!

TODAY'S TRIVIA: racecar

birdpuke 1975 - Barry Manilow's "Mandy" goes gold

Hi Rusty!
In the Netherlands 2morrow is "Nationale Herdenking Watersnoodramp 1953". 50 years ago there was a spring tide (is this correct in english?) in combination with a huge storm. The water levels were never as high be4 and a lot of the dikes collapsed in the southern part of the Netherlands. 1835 people were killed and thousands had 2 be rescued from rooftops etc.
If u want 2 read some background-information u can check here: http://people.zeelandnet.nl/voeveren/inleiding%20rampE.htm
This was a major disaster 4 the Netherlands, especially because we were still recovering from World War II.

Igor! Incredible story and photos. We have dikes along the Connecticut River here in town and back in the ?20s - before the dikes were built - we had highwater over my head in the lowlying areas near the river. A lumber yard down that way *donated* all of their lumber to the neighbors who towed it away in rowboats as salvage.

Here's another shot I took a few weeks back. Thought it was interesting.

The dikes are considered better than 50 years ago, but the disaster can repeat it selves. The dikes are not strong enough for another storm like the one that happened years ago... We have simular problems in Limburg, almost every year the have floodings from rivers. Those floodings are caused by rainfall upstream.

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Igor van Riel (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1157) on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 11:13 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Nice pic Cecil!
Our dikes are much better now! After the disaster, the Delta-plan was created. The whole coast-line of the Netherlands has protaction which can resist these kind of storms (and even much worse!). If u ever happen 2 be in the Netherlands and have some time left: go 2 the Neeltje Jans (http://www.neeltjejans.nl/). There u can see how huge the waterworks are.

Now there u have a point Martin!
Our outer dikes are high enough, but the inner dikes should become stronger and higher. Although I do think the ultimate solution will be 2 give some land back 2 the rivers (so no building near the Maas!).

Igor, let's keep the same story... :-) I must confess the Delta plan is a big step forward, but there are some week spots there...

I doubt if giving land back to the sea is a good plan. You must keep in mind that I live near the lowest point in Holland...

Ok Martin let's try 2 :-)
There might be some weak spots, but a disaster like 50 years ago is out of the question (I think). The biggest danger comes from the rivers these days, not from the sea (again I think).

Top of pagePrevious messageNext messageBottom of page Link to this message  By Igor van Riel (Extraordinary BonaireTalker - Post #1160) on Friday, January 31, 2003 - 11:22 am:     Edit PostPrint Post

Not 2 the sea Martin :-), only 2 the river.

Some dikes are as weak (or even weaker) as those 50 years ago. That is what some of out big brains at "rijkswaterstaat" say. I doubt if they only say this to get more money... :-) I know we could be in serious trouble if some of the dikes collapsed. The population is much more concentrated in some areas so if the dikes break and the water gets to Rotterdam or even Middelburg or Zierikzee, there will be large numbers of casualties and a lot of financial damage. (of course this is just 2 cents from me... :-) )

One of the big problems in 1953 was the water coming in2 the Oosterschelde and beyond that point there was not much protection. Now with the StormVloedKering closed (if it closes and closes fast enough of cours!) that cannot happen.
But I'm afraid we will never know until it's 2 late :-(

Your country has a very tough problem. It begs the question, what is the plan if the sea rises 15 meters? I've heard some nasty rumors about this is the coming decades. I suspect you'll do fine but need more work. I'm much more concerned about some South Pacific islands and especially Bagaladesh (sp).

You must be closely watching the big ice sheets. Remember don't worry about the one's over water (no change if they melt), it's the ones over land that can change the sea level. I just read a long article on the Antarctica. The short answer is they really don't understand how the ice flows, they just know it does.

Well, Cecil, I agree we should be more concerned about those countries, but if the sea would rise by 15 meters, we would be in huge trouble!
A big percentage of our country lies beneath the sea-level 4 already (I thought it was 53 %????).
