Good morning/afternoon Igor! and thanks for the day-start. I've not been around, because I've not been here! One day between trip to Bon and a business trip to New Orleans. I'm ready to be home for a while now. The highlight of our N.O. trip (besides celebrating my Jimmy's birthday)y was our trip to the Aquarium of the Americas. Saw all of our favorite fishes and other creatures; the usual sharks,i angels,t rays eels, plus a very nice frog section, uplayful sea otters, and penguins!!o I had to fight the urge to jump in with them to say "hello". Then, we saw the IMAX 3D movie about the kelp forests in California. WOW! that was neat. I very highly recommend these activities to anyone visiting that city. Speaking of kelp, hope Cindy's baby kelp made it through the storms. m.

Is it only Tuesday?!?! Gosh, it seems like Friday to me. I am ready for a weekend.
I hope to get time to write my trip report this week. I got a new device to download pics faster off my scan disc. I spent hours last night trying to get it to work. Couldn't get the computer to recognize it or driver was not found....I started saying bad words, so I gave up in wee hours and went to bed. Same thing happened over a year ago when I got software to edit my digital video. Couldn't get it to work so it is still unused. I probably have over $1,000 in software and hardware that I have never been able to get to work properly. Oh well, I can still get the pics off the old way with the serial connection instead of the USB port.

Mike: RE your USB devices & your 'puter. There is a known issue with USB & PCs that originally
came with Win95 & Win95A. If this is true, your PC will not run USB stuff.

If your PC came with Win95B, check the Device Manager: Do the USB Ports show up?
If not but your system does have USB physically installed they need to be enabled in the BIOS.

If they are enabled in the BIOS, goto this site ftp://support.visioneer.com/ftp/updatesoft/usbready.exe & proceed with the download that pops up. This is a utility that you can run once you've downloaded it to verify the USB stuff on your PC.

If the utility reports everything is peachy & you are running Win95B, goto Start->Control Panel->Add/Remove Pgms. In the listing of programs look for "USB Supplement to OS2R." If it isn't there, it can be downloaded from Microsoft's site. (DO NOT use this software on a PC that came with Win95 or Win95A installed---You can fry your PC!!!!

If your 'puter is running Win 98, it could be that USB has not been enabled in the BIOS.

Hope the info above will point you to a solution, Mike! Keep me posted :)

WOW! I wasn't expecting to get free computer advice on this board. Just felt like venting.
Thanks, Barb. The computer came with Windows 98 (4 year old Del). It has two USB ports. Both have been in use. Maybe that is my problem. I unpluged the scanner to use that port for the Scan disc unit. Maybe that port is still being claimed by the scanner. The other one is hooked up to my roadrunner internet connection. Do I need to install another USB or should I be able to change the scanner and disc reader on the same port? I can try some of the other stuff you recommended tonight.

Mike,
the advice Barbara gave u is only 4 Windows 95. U're using other devices with your USB-ports, so they are enabled in your BIOS.
Do u change the devices when the 'puter is on or when it's off? If u're ready 2 try something:
-------------------------------------------------
WATCH OUT: I don't know how much knowledge u have of 'puters, so if u don't know how 2 reinstall your scanner and roadrunner internet connection: don't try this!!!
-------------------------------------------------
U can de-install all USB-related stuff (all devices, the USB Controller(s) and the USB Root HUB(s)) by removing them from your device-manager. Disconnect all the USB-devices and reboot. Windows will detect the USB Controller(s) and Root HUB(s). After windows reinstalled them, plug in your Scan disc unit first. If this works u can add the other devices one by one. If this sounds like magic, but u do want 2 try it, feel free 2 mail me! Good luck :)

Well they was one person - a friend - but being only one slowed the whole process down. And I don't like glass. I wasn't prepared for any mess whatsoever, so the bit I got seemed much more than it was. stressYou know, stress turning into paranoia, turning into despair. I was moving things from one room to another and in the end had no idea where things were. I learned I like to be in control of my environment, or at least have the myth that I am. I can laugh now, but I was crying then. cry

I had to have my bedroom radiator moved cos it was too high with the new window in. Plumbers made a bit of a mess. window

All in all they look lovely and keep me warm, but had I known I would have waited until I was less busy. sisyphys

Igor,

Thanks. I printed out those suggestions. I will have to make sure I can still find the CD's for the internet and scanner first. They are both less than a year old so they shouldn't be too hard to find. I may try that.

A new computer sounds like an easier sollution to the whole thing. I will have to talk to Santa about that. But that might cut into dive trips next year.

Mike: One of the computers in my office is a 4-year old :) Dell running Win98 SE. Is your Win OS Win 98 or Win 98 SE? There are probs with the first rlse of Win 98...which is why 'ole Bill had to put out the Second Edition haha.

If you go Igor's route it would be a good idea to have the CD for the OS that came with your 'puter within reach. Dell would have given you either a CD from Microsoft with the Win 98 OS label (it will note on the right side if it is the Second Editon) or a Recovery or Diagnostic CD instead :(.
Sometimes deleting drivers (Igor's route) may result in the "New Hardware Found" dialogs demanding the Win 98 CD.

USB stuff differs from serial stuff:
For serial, the PC must be turned off before the serial device is attached.
For USB the sequence is: software/driver install, then reboot !!!, then plug in the USB device.

Barbara

Barb and Igor,

Thanks again. Yeah, now finding the Windows CD could be a challenge. That was about 4 years ago I got that. I think that is what the computer kept asking for when I was trying to install my video editing software with a firewire connection. I finally gave up. If I get this USB thing fixed and find that Windows CD, maybe I will get the video stuff out and try to make it work again.

You guys have inspired me. Of course by midnight, I may be saying those bad words again.

Mike: When you find the Win 98 CD (I'm optimistic that you will!!:)), look carefullly at the path you are given in the From: text bar. Sometimes it defaults to C: or A: -- if your CD drive is D: the path needs to start at D: (I was tricked by this once...Fool me once, shame on Microsoft. Fool me twice, shame on Barbara :))
