Does anyone have experience with split fins???
We just bought some and I am curious what the opinion is about diving with split fins.
My husband bought them becourse he uses a lot of are and never manages to do longer with his air then maybe 40 minutes on 60 feet.
He is a very large man 6 feet something (1,96 meters)so maybe that is why he needs so much air but he wanted to try the spilts becourse they suposed to coust less energie to use.??
He also gets painfull ankels with the normal fins and the spilt fins are in an angle so he doesn't need to stretch his feet so much.
He got Twin Jet fins.twinjetfins
I also needed new fins and becourse he got the split ones I also bought them to keep up with him becourse I heard that you go faster.
I bought the Twin Speed fins.twinspeed

Does anyone else dive with split fins??
And is it very different from normal fins??

Only 1 month and 1 day before we go!!!:D

Would never go back to my old fins again. Been using Scubapro graphite for last 5 years.

Bios here. We both bought them. He is 5'10" and I am 5'0". I love them because they are negatively buoyant and I no longer have to use my ankle weights. He loves them because he can be a torpedo - you can really move with them if you want to.

I would be very interested if any one knows anything about air consumption with regards to the fins. We bought our Bios early on, so our air consumption was getting better any way. I checked my log book and no noticeable improvement after the purchase.

I love my Scubapro Twin Jet Split Fins they have the power to move me through the water with out raising my breathing rate, which is very important to me. I have a very low gas consumption rate. I run about .35 ft3 or 10 liters per minute at the surface.

As you can see I don't always travel light.

7 Tanks

The best way to improve your gas consumption is to get in better Aerobic condition. You will see a dramatic improvement in your gas consumption if you improve your conditioning.

One other possibility is. If you are not neutrally buoyant you will be swimming the whole dive, which will cause you to burn though your gas. A quick check for neutral buoyancy is to stop kicking and see what happens. Ideally you should just hang there. If you sink or float up you are not neutral and part of the force from your kicking is used to hold/maintain your depth. NOT GOOD you have to kick harder and more often.

Sorry about the double post my Browser is acting up or on its own.

I was a Safety Diver / Tanker for the 499 ft. Inspiration Rebreather dive at Karpata. The 2 tanks on my back were Bottom gas and the 3 on my left were my Travel / Deco gasses. The 2 tanks on my right were off board gas / open circuit Deco tanks if needed for Helmut.

Apollo Bio Split fins here...and I'm with the rest...will never go back! I did like Mary's scubapro splits (like Walt has) and am thinking about trying them for my dry suit. The apollo's are a little too flexible with all the weight, etc. with the dry suit so I need something a little stiffer. Plus, they come in PINK..lol!

Walt, love the pic...I don't know if I like that one, or your profile pic better...lol!

Lillian, I think that Walt's pic and comments should convince you that you made the right purchase:-):-):-)

We have yellow Atomic Aquatics Splitfins. They're great! I call them my super fins. They decrease air consumption, are fast and are good in currents. I learned the flutter kick which I use when I want to go fast.

Nice picture Walt, you are a superdiver on that one!!hahaha
Can't get enough of diving eej??:P;)

What is "The flutter kick"??
Is it like the move "The man of Atlantis" used with both legs doing the same in stead of 1 leg up and one leg down??
Must try that "man of Atlantis" kick someday anyway!!:P
