Hi Folks!

I got a kick out of today's webcam thread title, which got me thinking of palindromes.

From the Oxford English dictionary: A palindrome is

quote:

[A] word, verse, or sentence that reads the same when the letters composing it are taken in the reverse order.

Some of my favorite examples of palindromes are:
Madam, I'm Adam
A man, a plan, a canal, Panama
and
Sit on a potato pan Otis

I'd LOVE to see some palindromes in other languages (hint hint to our Dutch, Papiamento, Spanish, Italian, etc. speakers!).

Have a great Wednesday!

Mare

Here are a couple...

Did Hannah say as Hannah did?

Pull up, Bob, pull up!

Hi Mare, some more:

Red rum, sir, is murder.

Rise to vote, sir

Was it a cat I saw?

Sir I'm Iris.

Like those things!
Greetz,
Theo

Hi Mare, Theo again, and here are some palindromes in Dutch, as you asked for:
I'll translate for you, however this is not funny anymore.........
Here you go:

Baas, neem een racecar, neem een Saab
(Boss, take a racecar, take a Saab)

Daar eiste hij z'n ei en zij het sieraad
(there he demanded his egg and she the ornament)

En er is ananas, Irene.
(and there is ananas, Irene)

Mooie zeeman nam Anna mee, zei oom
(Nice sailorman took Anna with him, uncle said)

See you again with some others.
Greetz,
Theo

And again............

some other languages:

Eine treue Familie bei Lima feuerte nie
(German)

Ein Neger mit Gazelle zagt im Regen nie
(German)

Et la marine va venir à Malte
(French)

aha (universal language)
(probably the eldest palindroma of our language)

Very nice is the website of Escher (drawer, designer) on:

http://www.mcescher.nl/indexuk.html

which contains lots of VISUAL palindromes!

LOL
Theo.

I'm a little short on palindromes but I do have an oxymoron from today.

This is a squirrel proof feeder.
Squirrel Proof

Here's also a teaser from the canyon.

Cecil, is the squirrel IN the feeder? I had one of those types...but the seeds were attracting mice and rats (from seed droppings), so I had to give up on that...my hummingbirds seem to be much less attractive to rodents!

If you're not getting tired on oximorons, go to:

and you'll find "some".

What do you think of an oximoron as "safe sex" ?

Good heavens this thread got busy!
I got very busy yesterday afternoon and evening and did not get a chance to play until now.

Great palindromes folks! I love the list of oxymorons!

and Cecil is back from the Grand Canyon!

I got interested in palindromes for a college computer science project. We had to test 'character strings' to see if they were palindromes or not.

My favorite palindrome is a long one:

Doc, note, I dissent. A fast never prevents a fatness; I diet on cod.

thanks for the fun!
Mare
