Annie B,
About that story,
Nudibranchs eat hydroids and encase the stinging nematocysts in their bodies as a defense against predators. No wonder she had such a reaction!
Three words for all who see interesting stuff under the water:
Look, don't touch.

Nice Babs! Was going to post that Hi Mom yesterday, but got too busy... One of the very first images on the day of the new cam location! That was really fun! I remember squinting into the sun for the full two minutes... Seemed like forever! Explains the fading smile. :-|

Mare. I had to look up hydroids. LOL. Very interesting, and I learned something new.

http://search.lycos.co.uk/searchFrame/searchframe.html?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.seaslugforum.net%2Fhydroids.htm&query=hydroids&SITE=uk&cat=web&qstr=SITE%3Duk%26query%3Dhydroids%26cat%3Dweb%26x%3D38%26y%3D16

Oops! that's a long link, and I don't know how to make a short cut.

Oh my goodness! I got so involved reading Annie B's link that I forgot to post
N is for stinging Nematocyst, the mechanism that enables box jellies (sea wasps), siphonophores (portuguese man-of-wars and paired bell siphonophores) and hydroids to sting you.

Here is an enhanced (lots of contrast added so you can see the thing) shot of a paired bell siphonophore. The parts of the critter that have the stinging nematocysts are the little gobs on the tentacles.

Paired Bell Siphonophore with stinging nematocysts

Mare. I have photographs somewhere of giant portuguese man-of-wars measuring over 3 feet across. They were washed up on a Devon beach here one year. Yikes!

N is also for nightmares. I may have one tonight after watching the Texas Chain Saw Massacres.

Sweet dreams buddies.
