We are leaving tomorrow (the 9th). Will we need any type permit to snorkel? Apparently the vehicle we have rented will not be suitable for the Nat'l park so we won't be going there. If needed, where would be the quickest place to get a permit on Sat afternoon? Is it Ok to simply park beside the road anywhere (out of traffic) or are there certain parking areas we should look for?

You can get a tag for the marine park (which includes all the water around the island) at any dive shop. I think it is $10 for snorkelers.

Debbie, It is mentioned a lot, but you should pick up Bonaire Shore Diving Made Easy (BSDME) at one of the local shops, not sure if Chat n browse has them available yet...Michael, are you lurking? This gives you the best information on where to each dive site is located and whether or not it is good for snorkeling. Use it in conjunction with whatever map you can pick up at from where you rent your vehicle. If you can switch your reservation to a truck, Washington Slagbaii Nat'l Park is worth the trip! You would enjoy Wayaka II if you are only snorkeling! It is fantastic! Also try to see if you can book a snorkel trip. It makes a difference in learning about the underwater life on Bonaire!

Welcome to BT!!! Have a fantastic trip! Post a trip report when you get back!

I second BSDME... it was invaluable!

Thanks for all the information. We already have BSDME. We are not sure if we need a permit if we do not go to the park. We have an early morning trip with Renee and would rather not have to go by a dive shop for a permit if it is not needed. Time is going to be short. Do we need a permit for nonpark snorkeling? Thanks Debbie

Hi Debbie, yes a permit is required for any water activity in the Bonaire marine Park Boundaries, which is all around the coast of Bonaire. As far as I recall it is $25 for Divers and $10 for snorkelers and windsurfers, I can't wait to pay my $10...in 48 hrs time !!!!! might even have to do the $25 if the 1st try dive class goes well!! :-):-)

Debbie, Roy is correct, you are required to pay a $10.00 fee for snorkeling. See: http://www.stinapa.org/naturefee.html

Enjoy your vacation!!!

Debbie, Everyone is right, you need the dive tags to snorkel. If you haven't gotten one when you meet Renee then she can prob. get you taken care of in a few minutes. You are required to have one even when diving with a guide. BTW, purchasing the tag gets you free admission to the park; just be sure to bring ID AND the tag receipt. If you can, take the long road in the park (they give you a map). It is surreal, and then make sure you dive Wayaka II as Ruth said, it's so much fun!!!!
