Hello Dixie,
What great photos!! I read that you used a Nikon D70- what lens are you using and are you using one or two strobes? I love the clarity and macro focus. Thanks for any information. Hope you return to Bonaire and Sand Dollar soon.

Thanks so much Everyone! I'm an enthusiastic amateur with many years of trial and (lots of) error. But it's SO MUCH FUN!!

Hi Vann - we'll be back at Sanddollar for 2 weeks in November. We've pretty much decided to visit Bonaire every year (although Nov. will be our 3rd trip in 12 months!!!).

I use one strobe (hence the reason I don't do well with wide angle). My main lens is the Nikon 60mm Macro - I use it 98% of the time as it's also great for fish portraits. All the above photos were taken with it. For macro I typically use F16-F20 and 1/80 shutter speed. I shoot in manual mode so I do change this around depending on the subject.

I did try out the Nikon 10.5mm fisheye this trip (previous eagle ray and baitball pics) but it was hard to use with only one strobe.

Dixie

How about starting Monday, I'll post 1 or 2 photos each week (until I run out of good ones) under the Bonaire Photography & Videography section.

We e-mailed you the address for the tumblers. Hope you got it. Let me know. Feel free the next time you stay in A-ll to leave me a couple pictures for the wall. I have bought alot of photos and art work on island but your shots are out of this world. 55 days and we will be on the island again for two weeks and on Bari reef ourselves. Is the Octopus the one right near the dock? I have a picture of him but not nearly as magnificent as yours. I guess I will have to practice, practice, practice until I get it right. Yours are just magazine perfect. Are you staying at Sand$ your next trip? November is great there.

Hi Sandy - yes I did get your email (thanks!) and I have the tumblers on order! I'd love to have you put a couple photos on the wall. We're staying at Sanddollar again in November. I really like it there - it's the best value for us coming in from Toronto. And it's quiet, safe, BDA is very good and I love Bari Reef for taking photos (although Jim insists on getting up and in the water by 7:00am every morning!)
The octopus is a different one we found near the 2nd boat mooring (just south of the Samur). The one near the dock is still there though.

Okay - here a couple more photos - 1 u/w and 1 land shot.

Sweet christmas, these are some amazing photos! Both these and in your other thread. I'd love to see more, including underwater photos you take anywhere in the world. These are really unbelievable. I'm talking "I would buy a book of your photography" level unbelievable. Do you have a flickr (or other photo website) page with more? (Please say yes, please say yes, please say yes)

Thanks very much! I think the digital world has improved everyone's photo skills - we can now take 80 or 90 photos on a dive (well-I do!!), see them immediately and make adjustments to get better quality pictures. For me, u/w photography is my favourite hobby so I do spend a lot of time looking at my photos and figuring out what I can do to make them better. Or, I get frustrated and want to hop on the next plane back to Bonaire...!

One winter (I think around 2004) we went to Bonaire & I was still using my old Nikonos V camera. I shot approx. 20 rolls of film, got home and took them in for developing. What a shock when I saw less than 20 pictures out of over 600 (I cried!!). The camera had somehow malfunctioned but I couldn't tell when using it. That was it -I bought my digital camera & housing and we ended up back in Bonaire that fall!!

Actually no I don't have a website of my photos but am planning to get something up and running within the next month so I'll keep you posted!

Dixie

Dixie:

I guess you'll have to set up a gallery in my condo so you can display your art work. I consider myself lucky to have such a talented guest. The comments from this website are well deserved for such magnificent photography. I think you really should think about a second career. I am so amazed at these shots. I can't wait to get to Bonaire to practice but it will be years before I live up to your standards. I'll need many lessons and thousands of shots. I've seen alot of photos and art and yours just takes my breath away. You are well deserving of all of these comments. Thanks for sharing.
