hi all,

just returned from a week in bonaire & wanted to make sure everyone knows about bonaire's thieves. on our last day of diving, we went north to dive jeff davis. no problems. went a little further north & stopped at an overlook just where the road changes from a 2-way road to a 1-way road to do our surface interval, just me & the hubby & a lizard sharing some water & funyuns. left the rusty rental van from buddy dive parked with the doors open, just a few things in it, just a few steps away. coming up from the overlook, i saw a white pickup parked near our van. just as we were nearing it, a guy (guys?) jumped in quickly & sped away. i immediately got a bad feeling and went to check on our few possessions. yup! you guessed it! away they sped, carrying with them my fossil watch (not too expensive, but my fave), my hubby's prescription ray ban sunglasses (someone's gonna have some difficulty seeing while looking cool), and my board shorts. my board shorts?!? come on. seriously?

when we were there several years ago, while we had dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants near the town pier, someone cut a hole in our gas line & siphoned out our gas. we only had a half a tank & they were kind enough to only steal a quarter of a tank, so we didn't have to walk home.

nothing ever changes.

take home: don't dive with anything but your gear, your bathing suit & a smile. they can't steal that.

sorry you had trouble Hillary MoT .

"don't dive with anything but your gear, your bathing suit & a smile. they can't steal that."

has been the motto of BT for as long as I can remember :)

[nothing ever changes.]
Hillary: you are quite correct...For years and years folks have been advised on this board to NOT leave anything of value in their trucks at dive sites.

Sorry to hear this Hillary. I had my truck tossed at Angel City this morning. I leave nothing of value, so they found nothing. I only realized what had happened because nothing was where I left it. Shorts and t-shirt were up front and I had left them in the back (I'm burnt and wanted to put the T on as soon as I removed the wetsuit). I'm driving an SUV for those of you trying to envision what I am describing. They tossed my towel into the middle section and then left the glove box open. Oh well...nothing lost. I was just surprised it happened there since there were several trucks at Angel City and the Hilma Hooker was swamped!

i have been diving in bonaire since 1994 & part of my introduction to the island was the whole "don't leave anything in your truck, leave your windows rolled down so they don't smash them on their way in, yatta, yatta, yatta," so nothing unfamiliar there. i'm just sorry that there has been no headway in making the island safer for their tourists, one of, if not their biggest, industries i would guess. sad.

I have had my truck gone through at least 3 times I know of . Only thing ever taken was my Shore Diving Book .
I make sure my footwear and clothing have no attraction to anyone other than myself .
I have absolutely no problem this this situation , breaking in my room while I sleep ... a whole different ball of wax

Great shots Hillary!

I've never had any theft problems on Bonaire but 3 people in my group last November had a couple inexpensive coolers taken from their trucks near 1000 Steps. By mid-week my dive boots usually smell really bad so I leave them in the truck hoping someone will take them....!!

I love your frog fish photo. Sorry to hear about the theft. How did the twins like Bonaire?

thanks, all! thank you, freddy for your help!! the twins had a great time, playing in the pool @ buddy's (i think they're just now beginning to dry out), seeing the lighthouse, windsurfers, flamingoes, donkeys, goats, cactus, lizards, beach.... on & on. they especially enjoyed feeding bread to the fish @ the dock every morning after breakfast. they've gotten really good at identifying parrotfish, angelfish, trumpetfish, & several of the others who came when the breakfast bell was rung! i was one proud mommy when they were telling folks getting ready to dive what fish they were seeing. and thanks to michael (fellow diver on the wild side dives with us) for the recommendation to eat @ mi banana, a restaurant owned by the family of carlos, one of the dm's @ bdr. great food & reasonable prices!!

Hi folks....we're about to make our first trip to the Dutch Antilles, but only 4 days in Bonaire. What's not to be missed (aside from the diving)?

again nothing new for the island but I'm sure most of us would expect to be victims of the same sort of crime at home malls, ball games or parking garages all a candy store to would-be thieves hopefully soon with more Dutch control we will see a better police presence and response

thought i would add (albeit a bit late) to this discussion but hopefully it will help someone out. in no way do i intend to bash bonaire.

my wife and i are living here until december (been here since the end of august) and we just had our first theft. it was totally my fault as i am well acquainted with the rules of leaving stuff in my truck, but i had our two scuba tanks in the back and ran into the grocery store for maybe 4-5 minutes (just needed milk and there was no wait). either way, when i came back, one was gone. why they took only one, i have no idea, but they were certainly brave as there were many people in the parking lot. tanks are not cheap, either. $230 USD.

anyway, as a lesson for anyone who thinks they can be lazy about keeping stuff in your car...just don't do it. you'll end up getting something stolen and it just encourages thieves to continue stealing.

lesson learned!

Matthew -- were they rented tanks from one of the regular dive shops (Buddys, Dons, etc) or were they yours? We've left rented tanks in the back of the truck numerous times with no thought of theft. After all, where would they go?

Sorry to hear about your theft.
