There is crime in San Francisco.
I took my car to the wharf. Parked it with my windows down and my doors open.
Only went away for a couple of minutes to take a picture.
When I came back, I saw some boys running away.
All my belongings were gone.
Can you believe that?

Hey Bob,
Nice try, how about this one….

There is crime in San Francisco.
I took my car to the wharf. Parked it with my windows “UP” and my doors “LOCKED”.
Only went away for a couple of minutes to take a picture.
When I came back, I saw some boys running away and noticed the window on my car was smashed
I picked up my cell phone and called 911 as I got into my truck and followed the little sh*ts
Within 2 min the cops were on the scene, arrested the punks and took them home to have a chat with Mom and DAD
All my belongings were returned to me and my auto insurance covered everything since my car was locked and not open.
Can you believe that?

Dan, there might be a problem with crime and your visit to the wharf in San Francisco.
What if the perps are in the country illegally? San Francisco has declared that it is a "sanctuary city" and can ignore state and federal laws as it chooses.
I live within an hour of SF.
The actions of SF city supes make me crazy, though I do not live nor vote there.

Hey Grunt,
Thanks for the insight; I'll keep that in mind the next time I run into an illegal Mexican rummaging thru my truck on Bonaire.

For the rest…

Do any of you realize that by trivializing the crime on Bonaire, regardless of the degree, makes you in one way or the other a partner to it? THINK PEOPLE!!

The folks on this board that have more to lose than a happy vacation should heed to the quote…

All it takes for evil to overcome is for good Men (and Women) to do nothing. Do something besides belittling the victims.

Dan...your post made me crack up "Hey Grunt,
Thanks for the insight; I'll keep that in mind the next time I run into an illegal Mexican rummaging thru my truck on Bonaire."
I hope it was meant tongue in cheek and I have to say I was a little put off by the remark by Grunt. Perhaps he should look up the specifics of being a sanctuary city.
And I guess illegal immigrants from any country (but especially those Mexican ones!) are the ONLY ones who commit crimes, right? (that was meant to be facetious).
I wonder how making bigoted remarks about a city in the U.S. will lend any help to anyone who has suffered through a crime ANYWHERE!

Oh yeah...I live in a "sanctuary city" and I DO vote

Please don't make fun of crime on Bonaire. Imagine waking up to find that you have been robbed while you were sleeping. It is an unbelievable experience to know that a stranger (or strangers) were tossing your nightstand less than six inches from your head!

I will be back for the eleventh trip, but not without some reservation. I don't care what they take from my truck, because I leave nothing of value in it. But to break into my personal space while I am asleep---now THAT is scary!

There has been a lot of theft in my town that is surrounded by corn fields in the middle of now where and about the same population as Bonaire. Basically people taking Gps or stuff from cars. A few unlocked doors opened and more stuff taken.

I guess it can happen anywhere.

to bob smits:

are you always an ass or do you just play one on tv?

my post was meant as a caution for people who might be new to bt/taking a first trip to bonaire/who might care about being violated. it was bad enough to have something taken from me, i certainly don't need you rubbing salt water in my wounds, minor as they may be.

i'm not naive, i'm not stupid & i'm not inexperienced. been diving in bonaire for 16 years. long story short about my watch being stolen: my computer failed & i had to use a rental wrist computer. i always wear this particular watch diving & as a matter of routine i wore that watch that day, forgetting that i had to wear something else. if i had thought about it, i would have left my beloved watch in my room. just a simple mistake on my part to take it off along with bad timing & bad choice of si spot. and bad people.

one more thing ~ what do you suggest for people who wear glasses so they don't get stolen while diving? should we either 1) wear them under our masks while we dive, 2) bury them under a cactus so no one finds them, or 3) not wear them outside the hotel & run over any stray goats/donkeys/people who happen into the road?

Not to get beat up here Hillary, can your husband wear contacts? This would be an easy fix.
And I'm sorry for your experience. Not trivializing the event, just posing a possible solution to a problem he may run into again on your future travels anywhere.
My husband wears contacts (gets disposables), only for our travels, (since losing his glasses at airport security, they got munched on the conveyor belt) a long time ago. He carries his glasses for reading in the room, and non diving excursions.

Peace!

@ Dan
Quick action of the police.
Never experienced such speedy reaction, anywhere in the world :-)
Must be in paradise -:)
@ Hillary
I can understand that you are emotional having had a bad experience.
I merely reacted to Steven who wrote:
“Why is it there is no conversation about crime? everyone seems to have the shhhhhh attitude. It does exist.”
As we all can read, there is a lot of conversation about crime on this board.
I assumed he was making a joke, and I returned with a tongue in the cheek story.
Apparently, most posters who reacted, understood

I was not referring to you. If I wanted to, I would have posted in the thread you started.
To make it clear: I don’t know you so would never say that you are “naïve , stupid or inexperienced"

Referring to your question about you glasses: If you do a search on this forum, you will find several practical solutions on how to handle that problem. I’ve read suggestions of bringing a watertight box or an empty underwater flashlight. People use that too for their cash or car keys.

Tape this statement to your car doors.

Please note:

We are aware of the theft on Bonaire, so there is nothing of value in this car. We also have less then a 1/8 of a tank of gas.

Done in, Papiamentu, Dutch, Spanish, and even English.

Anyone good at translations?

They make glasses cases that you can clip to your BC while diving. I don't wear prescription glasses but I love not being blinded when I surface so I always bring along a pair of sunglasses when I dive.

I didn't realize we were supposed to periodically announce the existence of crime. What is the interval for this announcement? I'd hate to be "hiding" anything by failing to announce it often enough.

Yes Grunt, I'm well aware of the definition, It does not protect immigrants in any way from being punished for breaking the law, it just states they cannot be asked about their status be it legal or otherwise. And quite honestly WIKI is not the most accurate source of information.
The overtone of your post was overwhelmingly offensive to me.

Having a crime committed against you, regardless of who commits it, is a harrowing experience, I just wished you hadn't taken it to a level it didn't need to go to.

For the record, I'm not a fan of wiki either.

From my observations thus far, I would want my placard to read:

"If you take the tires, battery, or gasoline, please leave me lots of water. You just stranded a female traveling alone."

I'll have to think about what I would want a placard to say that I could put over the front door. :)
