Seventh trip to bonaire in 6 years. It seems over the last 6 years crime on Bonaire has increased.
First 4 years only petty theft sun glasses change ect. Last year it cost me a extra $500.00 stolen camera at Slagbaai This year it cost an extra $2000.00 Camera lap top cell phone and money. At Golden Reef.
2 apartment broke into on 17th.people were at home watching T.V and saw nothing.
Other than the robbery we had a great time on island.

In May of 2009 the owner of GRI explained in great detail their plans for improving their security on SB. A couple had been burglarized the night before their departure in early May, their post is on SB. Did any of these improvements happen? Did you feel safe? How was it possible for the burglars to enter? Did you know ahead of time about previous incidents?
I am a regular to Bonaire, I am trying to understand what is happening right now on our favorite island. To anybody saying, there was always crime and it is something to be prepared for, I would have to say: not at this rate. Also, the thieves are not focusing on tourist accommodations alone, local homes and businesses are just as often burglarized. On Bonaire in 45 days :)

I stayed at Golden Reef for two weeks . The separate villa was broken into while I was staying there . Somebody checked my door in the night but I was awake and they scrambled . I found a two by four to support the sliding glass door .
The back door was a deadbolt / skeleton key . I stuck a kitchen knife between the top of the door and the door-jam . It acted as an alarm if the lock was violated .
The fact there is no staff at night leaves you pretty much on your own .
Knowing what I know now...I will pay extra and stay at one of the upper more secure resorts on my next trip.

I know all places are having issues but I will go with the "24 hour security guard routine"
Good luck Richard and thank you sincerely for your upfront report . Well done lad.

Richard, someone posted information about the place they were staying and 2 break-ins. I wonder if yours was one he was talking about?

Well, the problem continues unabated. We are staying at a smaller resort in Hato, and our two neighboring rooms were burgled last nite. Crow/pry bar was used to force entry at about 9pm, while guests were out.

The thieves got everything of value, laptops, cameras, memory cards, passports.

I've been robbed on Bonaire before, but always small things from my pick up while diving remote spots. Never been subject to anything this brazen.

I can only speak for myself of course, but IMO, this is unacceptable, and if Bonaire is unsuccessful getting these gangs under control business will really start to suffer from lost tourism. I'm in love with the Island, spending 10 weeks over past two years, but find myself having to think twice about bringing my family this holiday season.

Please. Fix. It.

Lloyd,

When you mention the separate villa are you referring to the two bedroom unit near the pool or the separate units located a block or two away from the main GRI location?

I'm beginning to notice a pattern in posts about people and their experiences with theft/burglary.

Sorry to hear Richard. We were staying in the 2br, but never got to meet you.

Yes, Tink, this is the same incident.

Richard, so sorry you had to experience this.

Thanks Justin. I was hoping to clarify that they were indeed the same, and not separate incidents.
