Just to remind everyone - This is our 4th trip to Bonaire. Never had any problems what so ever. Of course we had been warned and I suppose we got a little sense of false security. We were diving Webers JOY- The old Witches hut and had our camera and cell phone taken from the truck. Fortunately not good ones the cell phone was a cracked razor and the camera not a real expensive one- but the pictures of course are gone.

Sorry to hear that Susan. Glad they were not costly items. Too bad about the photos, but they will always be "alive" in your minds eye. :)
Hope you had a great time otherwise.

We leave nothing of value in car while in Bonaire. One person we know even had a (used) T shirt and shorts stolen from car. How valuable is that?

Get a small plastic "wallet" for your ID and credit card and wear this while diving or snorkeling.

With less than 15,000 population, hard to understand why police can't figure out the culprits.

That seems to be a popular spot for thieves . I have heard of a few people getting things stolen there .
While solo diving last year I went down to do a dive there , I did not like the conditions so I returned to my truck . I interrupted a guy that was just getting ready to do his thing .
I had nothing anyway but if I had of been a few minutes slower I would of had a confrontation on my hands .
I applaud BT for allowing these discussions . It is good education .

Witches Hut/Weber's Joy does seem to be popular for vandalism. Once had my truck searched by some losers, but they found nothing and left my smelly t-shirt and old batteries.

I did notice last October at Andrea 1 some broken glass...like car glass had been broken. I guess they are breaking windows now to get in trucks.

I would probably offered him anything he wanted out of my truck , I literally only leave what I do not care about and hate fighting other than self defence .

It is the same thing here . There are remote dive sites that thieves visit . It is hard in this part of the world to not leave things in your vehicle as it is cold water diving .

I have got use to going grubby when diving . Here after a cold water dive you really need some warm clothes to get into , shoes are nice too.
If we lock our truck here they will break windows and crowbar trunks just to look .

The difference is the burglary thing , that is out of control on Bonaire . Here they usually respect your premises if you are home.

Why take a credit card when diving. I don't know of any fish that accepts them anyway.

It is good that BT allows these posts. Of course I agree we probably would have given these things up if it had been necessity- It is the feeling of violation that is worse- scared everywhere. We still had our empty dive bags in there- that could have been worse trying to get a new bag to get our gear home. Walked over to Pasa Bon Pizza to get pizza last night and came back and 2 truck doors were left open of course nothing in it now but we thought give it up already.

Good stuff. Just a funny anecdote, to a sad story. Tim and Tom brought down an extra suitcase last month to pass out some stuff to friends. They actually left the suitcase in the back of the truck the whole time, because they didn't want to bring it home. They were hoping it would be stolen. No luck. LMAO

Susan, I have to ask. You left your empty dive bags in the truck as well?

I am sorry you were a victim, and am glad you are enjoying your trip...however, it brings home the point do not leave ANYTHING of value in the vehicle. I figure if I am going to miss it, I do not take it...period!

Link, I left a hat once in the truck hoping it would be taken...no takers...had to lug it home...

Yes Tink our empty dive bags were still in our truck call us nieve if you must but if we can help any other person we want too. BUT I have heard that everyone who is doing the stealing is actually related to another who is a parent a cousin uncle aunt- What I would Like to see is BT'ers buy the police dept a motion detecter camera like they use for hunting- but maybe that is more nieve to think that would change anything

Thieves steal dive bags here if left in the vehicle . Nowadays they take anything.
I leave my mesh bag at hotel and use it to taxi my gear in and out of the truck . You can get mesh laundry bags that are very reasonable at dollar stores etc . Take two or three on a Bonaire dive trip and look at them as ... disposable

update to that Feb trip- Got our cell bills and verizon never cancelled the phone!!!!!!!! Eventhough we specifically called their 800 number and advised them to cancel any service in and out of that equipment. total damages 1,844.43 total roaming from Bonaire to the Netherlands. I could post some numbers but we are thinking of mailing this bill to the police in Bonaire. The violation of having something stold goes way beyond the actual thievery. Verizon is going to investigate but no promise of any adjustment at this time.

I dont mind checking some numbers for you.
Your greatest chance of succes with a reversed search is when the called numbers are no cell phones.

Cell phone numbers look like:
+316
Where 31 is the country code and 6 is the first digit of a cellphone.
+3120 will be amsterdam
+3110, Rotterdam, +3130 Utrecht
