Darlene, thank you for the beautiful pictures. You all saw a lot of that octopus didn't you.
I liked your above water shots, too. :-):-):-)

You got some great shots. Thanks for sharing. My favorite is the porcupine fish.

Thanks all. We both love taking the pictures as much as sharing them!
Linda, we saw many octopus. I didn't count but I would say we say we saw three out in the open and another 6 or 7 hiding. Renee has taught us well! :-)

darlene, 24 more hours and we're on our way home. thanks for the pictures. i'll email as soon as i hear from my sister about the golf tournament.

janet, that is a balloonfish, not a porcupine fish. ironically the porcupinefish is smooth and the balloonfish has visible spines. the balloonfish and web burrfish are very similar except for some dark lines on the burrfish.

Great pix, Darlene. Thanks for posting - virtual diving is the only thing that keeps me sane in the absence of real diving.

And thanks for the education on the balloonfish, Pat. I was wondering if it was a balloon or a porcupine myself.

Dan

we saw a web burrfish last week at 1000 steps then a balloonfish last saturday at jeannie's glory. i had to check the books to learn the difference. but i do remember that the porcupinefish doesn't look like it has spines and the balloonfish does.

Pat, I am sorry to hear that you are on your way home. You and Mary are very lucky that you get to stay as long as you do! I wish I could!!
I hope you have safe and uneventful travels!

"that is a balloonfish, not a porcupine fish"

This is quite confusing; sounds like they're one and the same:
http://marinebio.org/species.asp?id=197

"The balloonfish, Diodon holocanthus (Linnaeus, 1758), aka balloon porcupinefish, blotched porcupine fish, blotched porcupine, brown porcupine fish, fine-spotted porcupinefish, freckled porcupinefish, freckled porcupinefish, hedgehog fish, long-spine porcupinefish, porcupine, porcupinefish, spiny balloonfish, and spiny puffer"

Nope, there's a difference, though
quite subtle - biggest tip off is
the presence of spots on the fins
of the Porcupinefish but not on
the Balloonfish. Now I know
the rest of the story.
