I wrote things down everyday, because I suffer from CRS. This first day I didn't write because, well, we were MIA. I will start by whining, but it gets SOOOOOOOOOO much better, promise....

Our plane was leaving out of Orlando at 2:50 pm. Well, here in Florida there are afternoon storms EVERYDAY. So, the storm starts, we sit in the airport, waiting. Finally the let us board our plane, but we had to sit and wait out the storm because of lightning. An hour late, we take off. I'm gettin' a little nervous because we only have an hour layover in San Juan, then leave for Bonaire.... The pilot got us there pretty fast, so we wouldn't miss our connecting flights. One of the stewards moved George and I up to the very front of the plane so we could get off first. We RAN thru the airport from gate 15 to gate one. There was our Bonaire-bound plane still boarding!!!! They would not let us board because they said our luggage wouldn't make it to the plane in time. It's an international flight and you must fly w/ your luggage...?... Next flight will be in 24 hours. OK, what to do, what to do.... Hours go by before someone is kind enough to tell us anything. Our luggage is downstairs in the C baggage claim. Off we go to get it.... No luggage there. So we go to Baggage Service. The young man at the desk was the first helpful person we met in this airport. He got on his computer to check where our luggage is for us. Well, it seems to be on the plane to Bonaire! This is fabulous!!! Now, we go back to the American Airlines Service desk to see what the $^^@*$% is going on. We were at the gate in time....why are we not w/ our luggage going to Bonaire??!!! NO ONE would talk to us. We had the Manager, Alexis, called twice, paged 4 times, he never showed up. George went looking for him, there he sits, with his feet up, shooting the breeze w/ some buddies over at gate 14! He decided to wait there and figured we'd find him eventually. That was precious! Could tell us nothing. Wait, didn't care, didn't want to check anything. Finally, we accept the fact that we are stuck in Puerto Rico for 19 more hours... We are told about this nice hotel in town and off we go.

OMG...they didn't pay for your hotel? You really need to write AA. I facebooked you a message about my experience...my luggage made it to Costa Rica, but I did not. UGH! They gave me a free ticket for my troubles. Can't wait to read the rest of your report. :-)

We take a taxi that cost us $19 to the Coral Beach Hotel. It is not on a beach, it is in a very scarry part of town. IMO. I was very uneasy there. George goes in and pays for the room, $79 w/ a discount. We go up to our room, the door is standing open, I was afraid to go in. I should've been. There were blood stains on the comforter, it was just a mess. We don't complain, we have done enough of this and just want to find some dinner. It's pretty late.

We decide on the Metropol, it's across the street. Excellent choice! The food was SO good. George had smoked chicken w/ black beans and rice. I had a sampler plate that had so much food, and a little bit of everything. It was unreal good! I wanted wine, and since Kathy wasn't w/ me to tell me what kind of wine is good, the waiter picked one that was really good. It was from California! LOL I could never describe how good this food was.
We kept joking about where George's chicken came from, because right next door was...
Cock fights
Metropol & Cock Fights
...seems his chicken just had a bad nite all around!!!

The next day we took the city bus to Old San Juan. What a beautiful place! We walked all around the city. There was a Navy ship in from Columbia, and they were letting people on to see.

George on ship
Me and hot Navy guy!
Then we walked around some more. I loved this statue. It depicts everything about Puerto Rico. I don't remember the meaning of all of it, but it was beautiful!
statue
More sight seeing....
coast w/ tree
I loved the houses in this area on the hills. It was a really neat place to be....
houses on hill
We found shops. George made the mistake of letting me into them. I found a Dooney & Bourke store. Now I am not a very girlie girl. But I love my purses. I don't have many, but the one's I have are HOT! And I LOVE Dooney's!!! I got 3...one is for my daughter...gosh, give me a break! LOL
We found a really nice taxi driver that took us back to the airport and his cousin works for AA. He tried to get her on the phone so she could help us in some unforseen way. He was just a really nice guy. Even gave us a break on the taxi ride. But it was still another $25 that the mishap had cost us.

We get to the airport early so we can be positive as to where our luggage is. Well, seems that helpful young man at the Baggage Service desk, who was just getting off when we went to him the nite before, didn't want to open the door behind him and get our luggage. It was right there.
They put it on our plane, we boarded, bound for Bonaire. Finally....

Oh, we're on the plane, I can see Bonaire out the window!!! This is great!!! And only gets better!!

I feel like I'm in a Jimmy Buffett book getting off the plane looking at the Flamingo Airport...

There's Erika from Sunbelt Realty there to meet us w/ 2 cold Brights! She's so beautiful! She helped us w/ so much of this vacation. I recommend her to anyone planning a vacation to Bonaire. We changed our flights coming home to make up for lost time in PR, so we stayed on 'til Sunday. We had to move to another house, because of someone else coming in on Friday to the beach house. Erika got us into a beautiful place up in Santa Barbara. So we ended up staying in such beautiful places on the island.

Anyhow, we had to get the rental car and George is wondering how he's gonna do this w/ the beer... Erika says "You're in Bonaire!" "But I have a beer in my hand..." "They'll probably give you a discount for that!!!" Hilarious!
We followed her to the house. It's way down by the Helma Hooker, The Lake, just a very quiet place. And nice!! Erika opens the door and I'm just in awe. It's fabulous! She had gotten us some groceries and a bottle of wine, Pinot Grigio Trentino. I don't know much about wine, as I've mentioned, but it's cool, the logo is a "P" & "G" - for Pegi & George. I'm just happy!!

After Erika finally got to leave, because we asked so many questions, we drove into town and found Karel's on the water. Got a seat where we could just stare into this beautiful turquoise and watch the fish while drinking cold Brights! We call this area "the strip" because the cars are just cruising the strip. It's a Friday nite, and the local kids are out having fun. It was so relaxing. One of the girls that works there gave George a quick course in Guldens and American money. Everyone in Bonaire is so nice and helpful with anything that you need.

Now it's really late, so we head home for some much needed sleep. (We got to the airport so early in PR that we ate like 4 times before the plane took off. So we just drank dinner in Bonaire! Beer, it's what's for dinner!)

Here's the house:

This is typed as I wrote it, so we are in Bonaire...

SAT:
(Written later in the day)
Slept late. Didn't know if Bert (our dive master, orientation giver, first dive buddy, great guy) was coming or not, because we were s'posed to meet him here on Friday, but we were busy in PR! So we watched a few shore divers & boat dives at the Helma Hooker.
Divers going into HH in our backyard
boat people

Then we got ready and went to town. We found Buddy Dive & Bert. What a nice guy! His day is was full so we made plans for a Sunday Morning dive. Then off to stroll through town....
We found my stoopstep & hung there for a while w/ one of my peeps. my buddy!

Then we found City Cafe and had lunch. I like that place! I had a veggie pita & George was happy that I told him to have the sausage & mashed potatoes. I knew he'd like that!
We shopped a little and got back to the car and headed home. By this time we couldn't resist the water anymore, so we went snorkeling in front of the house. (or behind the house, whatever!)
George snorkeling
There were french angels, stoplight parrots, blue parrots, and lots of small fish, even 2 blennies! I didn't take my camera because I didn't have my bc and pocket, I didn't want to carry it over the rocks on entry which ended up being really easy. There's a ledge there, then another rock in the water, it's like steps and no problem getting in and out. I love this place!

I called home, where my sister is staying for her vacation, and taking care of Calypso, my dog. She had to take him to the vet because he is very sick. It's his nerves. He has panic attacks when we leave him. He has meds for this, that's right, my dog takes meds too!!! He has blood in his stool, well, it's nothing but blood, and is throwing up. The vet did blood work and gave him subcutaneous fluids. He's on antibiotics just in case. They've never seen symptoms like this. I called the vet. I couldn't stop crying. Once I explained about his nerves, they understood. He's just got himself worked up too much. He's not eating. Just laying in the chair that he gets in when he's nervous. I told my sister to keep him drugged up. It'll help.

I had 2 Brights and went to bed and slept for 9 hours straight! I never sleep more than 3 hours at a time. I was exhausted, cryed too much, and in the most relaxing place in the world!

Oh Pegi, how wonderful! I am LMAO about the chicken! Although I think cockfighting is inhumane (MODS, Please remove the term cockfighting if it violates any rules).I am happy for you to have had such a magical time, I suspect you are planning a follow up trip!

Nice posting Pegi Sue..I've worked with several of the folks over at Sunbelt, all were wonderful & helpful people. Erika used to be a divemaster at BelMar.

It's quite unfortunate that getting to Bonaire can at times be an extremely stressful experience, but once you're there the unpleasant memories of traveling begin to fade (of course the Brights help).:-)
I believe Esmeralda (the Blue House) is located in Punt Vierkant . Or did I misunderstand, did you also stay in Santa Barbara also?

Yes, blue house is in Punt Vierkant, but is called Esmeralda Beach House. Later in the week we move to Santa Barbara. Gosh, be patient, I'll get to that.... LOL

It's taking me forever w/ these pics!!! I wish I could post the UW ones w/ this story, but they'll come after...

Check back in a few minutes, I'll have more.....

SUN:

I just got off the phone w/ my sister. Calypso is better w/ the meds!! (Just like me!) He's very mellow. He's eaten 2 dog biscuits since we left. He's even been sleeping in bed w/ her! Yea! Just keep him drugged up and he doesn't even know I'm gone.... Now I can relax!

OMG! George just called the airlines. We are staying 'til NEXT Sunday!!! Gotta make up for that Puerto Rico trip! We are gonna have to find a place to stay Thurs.-Sun. This place is rented. I'm sure Erika will help w/ that...
As we are sitting here on the porch a flamingo flew by. How cool!

pelican2 G in hammock
sunset Says it all....
Bert came over. We did our orientation and he told us which sites would be easiest entry/most enjoyable for me. (I have a hard time getting out!) We got our tags. Went in! It was beautiful. I took pics of lots of fish, coral, animinies & a few eels. George was trying to tell me something, showing me his guage, so I tryed grabbing it. Not what he was showing me. Seems I had gone to 72' and didn't know it. Oops... I was taking pics, a fish dragged me there! After the dive Bert got onto me for that & is letting me borrow a computer for the week. He drops off and picks up tanks from the front of the house, like a milk man!!:-)

MON. MORNING:
I woke up early to a beautiful day. I love opening this place up & there's just breeze and turquoise water!

Yesterday, after our dive we drove south past the salt works place & slave huts.

Pegi -

Thank you for the detailed report. Even though we've been to Bonaire four times, we almost always learn something from trip reports.

Let me urge you in the strongest terms to write a very specific, pointed letter to American Airlines senior management regarding your unforgiveable treatment. I want to believe that someone in senior management is going to cringe when they hear how a handful of unconcerned individuals can undermine the customer service program of a multi-national corporation. I hope you can garner an appropriate apology from American and you most certainly will benefit all other travelers on that AA route by making your grievances known.

Please let us on BT the results of your contact with AA.

We cut back across to Kralindijk & headed north. We found Rum Runners & had an early dinner. It was great! I had 2 pina coladas w/ the wooden animals!! (I felt lucky, because someone on here was saying they didn't have them anymore.) I never drink foo foo drinks (actually haven't drank at all since January!), but it's vacation... Oh, they were good! Then we headed N again, stopped at 1000 Steps, took more pics of the cliffs & just the beauty of this end of the island. We turned around where the road becomes 1 way, it was getting late. We went into all of the areas w/ the big houses. I found my pink house that's for sale for $5.5 mil. Yeah, I think we'll go ahead and get it while we're here!

Super report, PegiSue, love the report and the pics, nice! I agree that AA should be held responsible for what you went through as you were actually at the gates when it boarded! How rude and very wrong for them to behave like that. And then your luggage was actually on the plane, yes, please complain loudly by letter to all you can send the letter to at American and hopefully, you will both have free airline tickets for your next trip or in the very least, reimbursement for your hotel and food.

You really made the best of it and so happy you enjoyed your trip. :-)

Then we found Eden Beach. That was a surprise after seeing it on the webcams. The restaurant does have people there. It's very nice, and I had another pina colada! The beach is much smaller than it looks on the cams. But it's so pretty there. We watched the sunset. Absolutely unreal gorgeous! With the N end of the island curving around, the sail boats anchored there, the music, Klien - unbelievable!

Then we "cruised the strip". Found Yellow Sub. Got on their cam. Located the restaurants we want to try while here & just enjoyed an evening drive. Another fabulous day on Bonaire!

Bert just came by w/ my dive computer & to pick- up/drop off tanks. Bert's trying to save my life w/ this computer...George is trying to kill me! He said that Bert said that 15 meters is 16 feet! (G is very good w/ numbers & this did confuse him!) But Bert said so, it must be true. Well, George needs to learn to understand Dutch accents. Bert said "SIXTY feet" and I figured this out and didn't listen to George!!! And it was more like 19 meters... Selective deafness....

Ok, I know that last sunset pic is the same one I put in earlier from the house. I got confused. This one is at Eden beach, the other was the same as the one w/ G in the hammock, only the hammock was empty.

I will start a new conversation for the rest of this. I know some people have a hard time w/ too many pics.

Believe me, AA will hear from us. It cost us so much time & money.... And the stress... OMG!!!
George & I didn't even speak to each other the whole way home, it got bad coming home too!! We are fine now, we were irritated and took it out on each other, we NEVER do that!

Gail, what is up w/ PR? That place really scared me!

I'm gonna stop for tonite. Will ya'll tell me if I'm rambling on too much? Please? There are a couple of days that I seem to have lost. But I have pictures that are making me remember what we did..... I'll just kinda explain the pics maybe. But I am enjoying this... my diary at yall's expense!:-)

We got stranded too (twice) in PR with AA & both times it was when we left JFK mid to late morning.
Now we fly AA to Miami to Curacao to Bonaire. More connections but so far has worked out much better :-)
Definitely write a letter to AA - we were comped our room & got food tickets for the extra day. They should do something for you!
Thanks for your detailed report :-)

glad you had a good time on the island.

you might also want to point out to AA that it's a big no-no these days to have unaccompanied luggage on planes. (don't know if you report this to the FAA or some other agency). I sat at a gate for nearly an hour recently when they pulled off luggage of some one that hadn't boarded, but their luggage had.

Terrific report. Get on that letter writing to AA. Shameful treatment. Sadly, AJ has many similar problems and delays. By the way, did I mention that I won the Florida Lottery and just bought the pink house!!! Let's see, did I take the pink pills and the blue pills or did I take the white pills? Hope this is not a dream. Where am I?

Thanks Timmmy!
Yep, luggage was right there in baggage claim, but rather than get it for us, they said it was on the plane to Bonaire....
We thought this was odd too. George was on the phone all nite and all the next day trying to find our luggage. No one knew anything. But when we walked into the airport that afternoon, they checked on the computer and found out where it was in seconds. Right there in baggage claim holding, where we had been the nite before to get it.
