4/4/05 Monday - I left Boston at 12 noon, close to on time, when I got to San Juan, AA announced that the flight crew had not arrived on island yet, so we would be delayed 2 hours. They lived up to their word and we arrived on Bon at 10:15……15 minutes after AB rental had closed. I resigned myself to begging Renee for a lift to the airport on Tuesday morning. On the flight with us was the Rincon Judo club, heading home after a meet. They took first place as a team and everyone was wearing medals! Needless to say the airport was filled with excited families……what a fun way to finally meet Bonaire! Listening to cheers, songs, and laughter!

I got my luggage and walked out the doors, Renee was right there and we headed off to her van. As we walked she asked where I had rented my truck, and I told her AB. She started to tell me that they were closed when a very nice lady came up to us and said that they had re-opened. Yea…..I could get my truck right now, instead of imposing on Renee even more!!! Then we were off to Liz’s house……and time for bed……it was nearing midnight, and boy was I tired!!!

4/5/05 Tuesday - I discovered bright and early on this morning that there were a couple of Prikitchis that like to greet the day right outside of the bedroom where I am sleeping. No need for an alarm clock here. So it’s up and going…..time to go to Chat and Browse to get a phone and meet Michael. What a terrific guy!!!! He had me all set up in no time….except for the fact that cell service for the entire island was down, and would be until 11am or so. He was nice enough to let me call Mary on his personal phone to let her know our number and that I was on island. Then I stopped at the Sand Dollar grocery and bought a few supplies…..most importantly a case of Brights! Got those safely into the refrigerator with a few other things….then it is off to check in at Wanna Dive. I was checked in by Nella, a very nice young lady, given the park lecture and we scheduled a dive for the next day…..so I could get wet before Mary got in. Next it is off to Bongos for lunch……and my very first Bright!
Bright
I sat and absorbed the view for a long time then it was time to get ready to find Gibi’s. He is a wonderful guy and a fantastic cook. I got to meet Chris, Liz’s son, along with Pat and Mary, Buster and his wife, and I don’t remember the names of the other couple. Renee was there as well. It was a night of great food, great company, and great stories!

4/6/05 Wednesday - Today I get to do my first dive on Bon! There were four of us….Nella as the dive master, Roger as her buddy, and Clement and myself.
Nella and Clement
Nella was a terrific guide and found the Front Porch seahorse, as well as a beautiful hawksbill turtle. I was watching the turtle hanging out in the blue, while everyone else was trying to show the turtle off to a couple of other divers….so I was the only one who noticed him eating a jellyfish!!! Too Cool!!! We didn’t have time to visit the cam….so that will have to wait until Mary gets here! I eventually got back to the house, was just starting to get together the stuff to go get Mary at the airport when her husband Dirk called to let me know she was having flight trouble and would probably not be in tonight. He promised to call as soon as he knew for sure….so now it is sit and wait. Not a hard thing to do on Liz’s amazing side porch…..when Dirk called to say Mary wasn’t going to be in until tomorrow night……I started working on the case of Brights.

4/7/05 Thursday – OK….so today I had an extra day to roam, so I decided to go shopping. I had a wonderful time exploring Kaya Grande, and purchased some very nice clothing and souveniers. I also stumbled upon The Cinnamon Art Gallery, so I went in and met Linda, (what a wonderful lady!) and bought a very nice “oil sketch” of a Prikitchi (a portrait of Spirit). Unfortunately Jake is off island AGAIN so I probably won’t get a chance to meet him. I eventually had to stop for food, so I went to City Café and had the most wonderful Blue Marlin in a caper sauce! YUM!!! I took all of my stuff back to the house and then headed to the Wanna Dive rum punch party, downtown. I naturally gravitated to the only other non-Dutch speakers and started chatting with them. Somehow we got to talking about Bas, and they very kindly pointed out that he was “right over there”
first sight of Bas
He came over and was introduced…..I told him I was picking Mary up that evening, and his eyes lit up and he said “Mary Mueller?” When I confirmed he got a big smile and said “we will be diving together next week” We ended up talking until I had to leave to go to the house to get the stuff to take to the airport.

I packed up several Brights and ice and leis and wrist bands and headed off to meet Mary! I was just walking up to the terminal when I heard my name. The first thing that went through my brain was. “Mary’s flight came in early and she has been waiting for me.” But when I looked I immediately recognized the “sunflower” truck and knew it was Susan Porter. She knew I was picking Mary up and figured it had to be me carrying the cooler of Brights! We watched the plane unload and went over to greet Mary when she came out. This is when I realized that I hadn’t brought a bottle opener with me…..duh!!! Susan came up with a brain storm and ran over to the bar with one and asked them to open it for us, they were very nice and even added a lime! As she was doing this, a very nice young lady comes up to me and asks if I am LaDonna??? She tells me her name is Ann and she has been talking to Mary and was supposed to get the phone number from me so we could hook up for diving!! LOL We eventually got everything up to the house, then Susan, Mary and myself went to Donna & Giorgios for dinner!!!

4/8/05 Friday – We start the morning by having breakfast at the Lost Penguin, (very good) then we got her all checked in with Wanna Dive and pick up tanks and head out to get wet…..we decided to start at “The Lake” (Mary has been nice enough to bring her second camera with housing, so now I can take pictures underwater too)
first dive
I had forgotten how to turn on the flash….so my pictures from this dive aren’t the best!

Next we went to “Andrea I”
tube sponge
We finished the day with Bongo’s BBQ
Bongo’s BBQ

4/9/05 Saturday – we ate breakfast at the house, then headed for “Oil Slick Leap”
Rock Beauty
Peppermint Shrimp
What a wonderful dive!!!
Then we went to the Sand Dollar “slab” for lunch
Iguanas
Next “Tori’s Reef” with Susan and Ann
Susan and Ann
The salt pans were doing something weird….Susan said she had never seen one look like this…..it’s kinda cool!!!! Was REALLY cool in person!
tie dye salt pans
We eventually headed home to get cleaned up and were planning to meet Susan for Dinner at Bobbejan’s BBQ. While we were cleaning up, (literally) Wally’s friend Don stopped by to introduce himself…..so we took him to dinner with us! After stuffing ourselves with delicious BBQ, we all went back to the house he was staying at, and started planning the next days dives.

4/10/05 Sunday – We started at “Hilma Hooker” Mary, Don and myself
Mary at Hooker
Don at Hooker
Then we hit “Salt City”…..I managed to be my graceful self and fall on exiting, nothing too bad just a scrape and a beautiful bruise!!!
We dropped Don off with plans to meet for dinner, then met up with Susan to do a “rubble dive” on “Front Porch”
We met Don for dinner and had Cuban Tappas at “?????”

4/11/05 Monday – We decided to go north, ended up at “Ol Blue” Don decided he only wanted to do one dive today….so he was our “dive Sherpa” for this dive, he hauled all of our equipment to the beach for us. Again, another beautiful dive.
If I only had a brain
We drove up to Karpata next and our dive Sherpa hauled all of our gear down the steps….what a nice guy!!! Great dive, entry wasn’t bad….exit was a little tough.
Gramma
For our dive interval, we took an East side trip, and saw the Indian inscriptions up near Rincon, Mary was driving and we randomly picked dirt roads to go down, fun!!!
cactus
We wore out poor Don, so he slept for part of the drive! We ended up at Jibe City, where we had lunch and watched the windsurfers play!
To finish the day off we met Bas at his house and played with the puppies before we headed out to do a night dive in front of his house on “Small Wall”
octopus
Yet another great dive!!! And Bas fed us at the end too!!!! What a great day!!!

4/12/05 Tuesday – Mary and I are on our own again for this dive, we went to “Bari” Mary and I both tried the “yelling technique” on this dive (it doesn’t work) I tried to tell her she had a 4-5 ft spotted moray laying directly beneath her…and she tried to tell me she was staring at a Coronet fish!!!! It all worked out and we ended up using other techniques to attract the other ones attention…but I now HIGHLY recommend some piece of equipment you can use to get peoples attention! Towards the end of this dive, I scared the heck out of this poor flounder!
flounder

Next we reached a mile stone…Mary’s 100th dive!!!
Mary’s 100th dive
We decided to play on the reef cam
Hula Mary
Hula Thong Diver
Unfortunately we had a ripping current so it was very difficult to perform for the cams.
I did however get a picture of the real “Picasso”
Picasso
We had a Pirate flag on this dive with us….(it did get captured but I don’t have a copy of it right now) we both signed it and it is now (hopefully) hanging at Gibis!
flags

4/13/05 Wednesday – This was our EARLY morning, we scheduled to meet Susan and Bas at his house at 7:30, because we are diving East side today!!!! We dove “Cai” and thanks to buddy breathing we were able to stay down 100 minutes!!!!! The three of them have gills I think…..they all had to share with me, or I would have run out!!!
Stainless Steel
Grouper-taken by Bas
Bas shared too much air with me…so he had to borrow some from Susan
Fan
Then Susan, Mary and I went to “Green Submarine” for another “rubble” dive.
For the evening there was a beach BBQ and night dive at fisherman’s hut. I was unable to dive that night due to an ear problem, but I enjoyed the evening anyway!!
Eddie
I met a gentleman named Peter Peart on this evening…..some of you may remember him from back when the cams were at Jake and Linda’s house……he was the guy that stood at the webcam everyday for a week, for half an hour at a time reading a book!!!!
Peter Peart

4/14/05 Thursday - My last day of diving, we originally planned on doing “Cai” again, but the winds had kicked up, and Bas determined it wasn’t safe. So instead we chose to do “LaDania’s Leap to Karpata” (Of course Bas has started calling it “LaDonna’s Leap” but I take that as a compliment!!!)
flowers
banded shrimp
winged comb jelly
Driving back, Bas showed Mary a short cut, so we wouldn’t have to drive all of the way to Rincon…as we are driving we start talking about all kinds of stuff and end up deciding to go for an adventure. So we drop the dive gear at Bas’ and pick up his camera and some beer and we are off on…….
“Bas, Mary and LaDonna’s Excellent East Side Adventure”
He took us to this magnificent cave
cave
With really awesome Indian inscriptions
mermaid
Then it was off to the Spelonk lighthouse
Mary and I
Then we visited several Bocas, and Bas found this rock, and made us take this
Mary, Bas and LaDonna
All in all it was a great adventure!

Then we met Susan for a dive at “Something Special” Here, my right ear gave out on me and decided it was done with diving, I could not get it to clear past 7 ½ feet, so I signaled Mary and Susan to continue and I got out of my gear and snorkeled instead. I saw some neat things including a sleeping octopus
octopus
A night Sargent
night Sargent
And a new and interesting kind of fish
Susan and Mary
Next Mary and I went to Wanna Dive’s Rum Punch party, where we chatted with Bart, “Bob”, Nella and Clement. When we left there we met Susan for dinner at
Pasa Bon Pizza. As we were waiting for our order, in walks Bas, Eddie and his girlfriend Sandra!!!! They all pulled up chairs and we spent a couple of hours talking and eating. What a wonderful day!!!! You could not plan a better day, no matter how hard you tried!!!!

4/15/05 Friday – Susan came to the house to pick up Mary and go diving, and I ran a few last minute errands, then went over to Photo tours to pick up the CD of pictures from Bas. Mary and Susan met me there, and Mary and I went to lunch, at Bongo’s if course. We planned to meet back up at Susan’s place at 1:30, so they could get in one more dive. At some point it was mentioned I should spend my afternoon chatting with Bas…..so that is what I did.
Bas at work
We had a great afternoon exchanging stories and becoming friends!!! I invited him to join Mary and me for Sushi that evening, and he decided to not only join us for dinner, but to also join us at the Cinnamon Art Gallery for a new “guest artist” opening. And to put the absolute icing on the cake of my visit, Jake flew in at 8pm and came straight to the gallery, so I got to meet him!!!! (He gives great hugs!!!) We then went and had Sushi (delicious) and then had to say farewell…sniff…

4/16/05 Saturday – unfortunately AA was too efficient and I arrived home 30 minutes early…..I miss you Bon!!!!

And I especially miss my new good friends…Mary, Susan, and Bas!!!!!!!

LaDonna...communication underwater...tank bangers! Kelly and I used them on our trip and they worked out great! This last time we forgot them, so I found when I wanted to get someones attention (particularly Dylon's when he wasn't paying attention) I took the little plastic ball that is at the end of the dump valve on the back of my BC and tapped it on my tank...worked pretty good in a pinch!

100 minutes! Did you have to share air with all 3 to make it back?

Cynde....I am now a true Bon addict!!! :-)

For communication underwater, Susan turned us on to these little guys called "H2Yo" They look like a little air cylinder and are filled with BB's or something and they are GREAT!!!! Sold by Reef Net!!!

On that Cai dive I actually only shared air with Bas and Susan....but Bas actually gave me too much so he ended up using some of Susan's too!! And Susan ended up coming out with just enough air to dry her reg and dust cap! LOL!!! It was PERFECT!!!!

LaDonna, you poor blonde girl. I can see by your post above that you have not yet received the 2005 October page to your calender yet. I am heading to the post office right now with an extra October page for you.

You will be surprised to learn that prior to your nieces' arrival, there are twenty-seven (27) days in October that your niece will not be at your house. Realizing that you may want a day to clean house (hide junk) before she arrives, I have determined (with the aid of my calender) that there are still twenty six (26) days available for you to be away from Maine.

Check your mail in a day or two. Hope this helps;-{)}

we tried the yelling technique too without much success. we have tank bangers but they wear out and break...maybe due to salt water and sunlight. instead of continuing to replace them at about $7.50 each we have rattlers. got them at phototours in town for about $26. yeah, the initial cost is high but they'll outlast a lot of tank bangers. and they are easy to hear underwater.

Here is a cheap and effective underwater noise maker. Get a 3/4 X three inch PVC nipple, threaded on both end. On one end put a PVC threaded cap. Inside put whatever metal scrap that just fits. An old socket works fine. On the other end put a 3/4 brass cap. You're done.

we use a carabina or a brass dog clip to signal each other...banged on the tank it is most effective

Thanks for the trip report LaDonna, is Mary going to do her own trip report? (HINT HINT!)

As for noise underwater, I do a pretty good imitation of a European ambulance -- high tone/low tone and somehow Seb manages to hear me. It worked with Martin too...

If you have that much trouble getting your buddies attention, then your buddy needs to pay more attention to you, and you need to be closer to each other. Sound making devices are GREAT fro scaring away the fish. Such devices should be for emergency use only, IMNSHO
When I find some small thing I think I will lose if I look away, I raise one finger, knowing my buddy will eventually see it and swim on over.

For cheap tank bangers, go to the camping department at walmart. They have bungie-cord things with a rubber ball on them - they are used to tie tarps down. A package of 4 is about $2.
