On Sunday, December 12th, 2004, the Queen Mary 2 docked at Bonaire - it was HUGE - here are some pictures from the perspective of the Divi Flamingo property...

First is a long view, taken from the Divi Flamingo south dive pier - the Queen Mary 2 and another cruise ship are docked at Bonaire.
qm2 long view

Second is a near view, showing the Queen Mary 2 just off the Divi Flamingo north dive pier (which is under construction).

Frankly,

I always liked those cute Dutch and Canadian girls sunbathing at FB! (Sorry, I'm a boobie guy... until a bit of Bu...hm...nevermind) But for real, that's just scary to imagine a ship that size hovering overhead...brrr rrrr. Next thing will be an influx of "Rasta guys" peddling their wares during docking day... Arrrggghhh

Cheers

YUCK! What an eyesore! There's a cruise due on March 22nd when my wife and I will be at the Divi. I'm so NOT looking forward to that day! I'm supposed to complete my dives for Master of Scuba Diving, so I hope my instructor decides to go elsewhere. I wonder if that's the reason I got such a good deal on the package. Well, It'll be a day spent North, instructor or not. Next time I'll be returning to the Sand$. Coach Izzy

That is huge! OMG...that is frightening! I'd be freaked out with that monster hovering over me while trying to relax at our place at the Divi...I can imagine there was a lot of "noise" that went along with it, too, right Bridget?? Engines running/idling, etc.

Did she engage her horn while she was sitting there?? Wow....if she did it probably blew away the entire bird populous as well as the land and water critters.

Thanks so much for posting these pics, Bridget....man oh man...I hope we are never at the Divi when one of these buckets floats into dock!! We have seen the very small cruiseliner on occasion but she is tiny and only holds 300 folks (pod people!) or so.

OMG...that would've flipped me out bigtime to see that sitting on top of me.

Yeh, I can just see the KLM flight attendants sitting up on the tanning pier now....wave hi to the nice folks on the big boat, ladies! LOL. Carole

I'm still amazed too, Carole :} Here's two more pix for you... In the wide pic taken from the ocean perspective, on the left side of the ship you can make out that blue historic building on the shore downtown, and on the right of the ship (just under the bow) you can barely make out the white pole of that non-functioning windmill that sits one block outside the divi property on the way to town.

from sea
from dive shop

Honestly, there was no noise at all while it was in port, but you couldn't help but stare at it! Rubbernecking, agape... The roads right in town were flooded with traffic as the Bonaire residents took their families out to look at the amazing spectacle of the world's largest ocean liner. The night it left (around 11pm) there was a very loud boat-wistle as it left dock and gracefully headed out to sea. We were in an ocean view room, and were able to watch it from our balcony - lights and all, as it went out to sea.

We'd return to Bonaire, to the Divi, when Queen Mary 2 is back in town, but then again, we did stay close to home (close to reef, too) to give the passengers & crew plenty of room in town :}

Thanks, again, Bridget! Wow....that's one heck of a liner!! I just can't imagine seeing her in person...what an amazing sight. Thanks for taking the time to post your pics for us to enjoy and gawk at! Ayo. Carole

PS I can just hear her horn blowing now.....that sound I do like....

When we were in Bonaire I was so struck by the contrast between the pastel-painted cruise ships and the rust-covered working vessels. The contrast of wealth and leisure versus hard, unrelenting work was poignant.

I sure hope that big boat steered clear of the coral. Many of them don't, at least in some parts of the Caribbean.
