Ruud and Diana?s Trip report sep 6 till sep 19

We arrived at 3.15 am on Monday the 6th. Since it was a direct flight, we did not encounter any problems. Although one of our luggage was almost transferred to another plane, I think going to Aruba, if we did not run after it our self. But we caught it in time! In our room at the Divi Flamingo we decided to go to sleep for a few hours. After breakfast we picked up our rental pick-up from AB-rental. Since we did not arrange our dives back home, we went to the divi dive shop to arrange all the dive related matter. And could make a checkout dive almost immediately. At Calabas reef, divi?s house reef. Beside the four of us (we travelled with friends, Hennie and Lisanne) was one other Dutch guy who had the briefing with us.

In the water we found out that no one was going to buddy-up with the other guy and decided to invite him with us. It really felt good to dive in the clear waters again, and to see so much life. This house reef was so easy to dive and there already was so much to see! Flamingo tongues, morays, trunkfishes and a glimpse of a tarpon. We could leave all the gear in the dive hut at the pier, so we did not need to carry all the stuff up to our apartment. Very convenient... But this did not take that long, as you will find out later.
For dinner we stayed at the hotel, restaurant Chibi Chibi and the food was very good (coconut shrimp.... mmm)

Flamingo Tongue:
flam tongue

Sep 7th. Today we planned to do two shore dives. The first was at Andrea I. Lots of gorgonians with hiding in them trumpet fishes (we really took a lot of photo?s of trumpet fishes, as well of trunkfishes), schools with different grunts. Feeding Flamingo tongues (also frequently made pictures of). And a big Rainbow Parrot fish. Unfortunately, this species is a bit shy for divers and not easy to approach. Back at the car, a lizard came to check us out. But sadly for him, we did not take any food along to give him. He definitely was not afraid, and was used to beg for attention from humans.
For lunch we went to Bongo?s and I did appear in front of the Beachbarcam, but I did not hold the sign close enough that it could be read. It said: Hi BT-ers and all four of our names on it. It was a bit weird to be on this side of the webcams,
Second dive was at Jeff Davies. Of course also a very nice drop off (I think I find every dive a bit special). On our way back to the exit point we came across two squids. One of them was really interested in our camera and liked to be our model. It even chased his partner (who was more camera-shy) away when it had some courage to come closer. I think we did hang around with them for 20 min.
It was Gibi?s night, so for dinner we went there. We met with Stuart, Linnea, Renee, Marc and Kitty and friend of theirs (and sorry... I forget two names) It was very nice to talk to them and hear all the stories of different dive sites. In the end Marc told us about the path that hurricane Ivan would take and that the next day could be a bit rough. We did not hear much about it during the day; we were off a lot for diving and at bongos. Now we did know why it was so crowded at the gas station. Marc told us as that it might be a problem to get fuel the coming days. After the Gibi?s dinner, we too, needed some fuel and cued up in line. Back at the hotel we found a letter that Bonaire had a Hurricane watch, in which the situation of Ivan was explained and what we should do in case things would get ugly.

Sep 8th. Ivan Day. The first thing we did, was remove our dive stuff out of the dive hut. We all thought that this hut was probably the first thing that would not survive a hurricane. The dive team from divi was also busy with removing all the stuff out of there, tanks and rinse bins. We went out for breakfast and after that for some food to cultimara. There was a whole crowd in Cultimara, trying to buy bread, which was sold out. So we bought some crackers, cheese, ham and of course wine and water. Back at the hotel we received a new letter, with a hurricane warning up-date and how we should prepare ourselves. The wind was gradually picking up. We did take some pictures, before the heavy rains and in between the raining period. It was expected to get at it?s worst part between 8 and 10 pm, but around 4 pm it looked a bit better and Ivan was travelling a bit more North of Bonaire. There was no need to leave the hotel. Living in the Netherlands and never had to deal with hurricanes we did not know what to expect (as, I think, lot of the Bonairians as well, since hurricanes do not pass frequently so close to this part of the world). At 6 pm, the power went out. We had ?dinner? with Hennie and Lisanne in our room, at the first floor (theirs was at ground level and we decided if there would be high waves, we would keep our feet dry...). At that point, we could see that part of the dive hut was already a bit torn apart, due to the waves, not from the wind. There was a lot of rain, and our balcony was turning into a small pond. In the end we did have some leakage, because the building was not used to so many water at once. So, we did eventually end up with a bit of wet feet. But that was not so terrible. After finishing our bottle of wine we decided to go to sleep at about 11.30 pm. The storm was not as worse as we expected (thankfully), but it was an interesting day!

divi's hut

Sep 9th. The day after Ivan. We were awake, quite early. And decided to see what Ivan had done. The dive hut was, indeed vanished. A lot of dead coral was washed ashore and on the deck in front of the dive shop. The cleaning-up was already in full process. There was a no diving advice, so we decided to go driving around the island and see how it was elsewhere. We went first to the east shore and to the Indian inscriptions. The weather was ?normal? again, meaning that it was very hot in the sun again... At Karpata, the waves where pretty high and one could see that the sea was not as clear, due to sand and other rubble.

We went to Rendez-vous for dinner. To our pleasant surprise, no French food (not that we dislike French food, don?t get me wrong on that) was served, but Spanish tapas. Very delicious. We where the only guests at the restaurant, probably due to the after effect of Ivan (?)

after

On the 10th we dove at Aquarius. There were more waves then normal, but we decided that the entry was not so bad... But the exit was a bit more difficult, the waves were even bigger and I got stuck with my left foot under a rock, while a wave was approaching me. While I turned to look at this wave, my body turned in one direction, but my foot did not... hearing a very troublesome cracking sound, coming from my knee.... I was able to get out of the water, but I could not walk very far. Ruud, Hennie and Lisanne, picked up my gear that I had taken off. And with some aid of the two guys I could get to the car. The dive, by the way, was nice, although in the shallow part was much more sediment then normal. But on the second reef (this dive site is part of the double reef system), was not much damage to be seen at first glance. And we only could have a glance, due to the depth and our bottom time.
Next was a visit to the hospital, just to be sure that nothing very serious was wrong with my knee. I still could walk a bit (though, slow) and it did not hurt when pressed on it. The doctor agreed with me that things could be much worse. I just twisted my knee and should take some rest the remainder of the day and the next day. And start swimming, which is a good therapy, until I felt some pain.

On the 11th, I stayed at the hotel, while the other three went out for a dive (very difficult not to be jealous...) They went to North Belnam. And told me that there were hardly any waves. O, forgot to mention, that when we where back at the hotel the other day, all dives where cancelled due to big waves...

Sep 12th. I tried snorkelling first, and that went surprisingly well. During this, we saw 13 small squids, hiding under the remainder of the dive hut. And Ruud rushed to get the camera and we took lots of pictures of that small bunch! I was very encourage by the fact that I could swim, without to much pain. In the afternoon we did a dive, again at the Calabas reef. And also a night dive at the same reef. That was a very interesting dive. At one point I felt something bumping against the back of my head... It turned out to be a big Tarpon. He and 3 others accompanied us during the remainder of the dive and using our lights for hunting. It is very difficult to take pictures of the tarpons, because their scales look like mirrors. Fascinating fish, I think.

Sep 13th. Since I did not trust my knee for a shore dive, we went with the boat. It turned out that we did dive at oil slick leap... Before leaving the hotel, it was not decided where to go diving. I did not like the idea of going to a site, which was also easy to do from shore. But well, a dive is a dive. There was a strong current and in the water we had to go into that current, that was the dive plan. Retrospectively, it was better to carried out plan B, making a drift dive. But since it was mentioned briefly, and not during the briefing, everyone was sticking with plan A, so we had to do that as well. But... we did encounter a frogfish, which we wouldn?t have found if we made a drift dive. Because of the current all the divers stayed together a bit, which made it a bit crowded. So, we decided for the coming days to make shore dives only, and seeking out the easy entry sites.

The Frogfish:

Sep 14th. Dive site Windsock. I could get in, relatively easy, with not much pain. We did see our first stingray of this vacation, but we could not get very close to it. The rest of the day we only did some reading and resting (that?s also very important on our vacations) Today was Hennies birthday, and we went for dinner at Mona Lisa, to celebrate. It is a really nice restaurant and we remembered it from the last time we visited Bonaire. No Gibi?s this night for us.

Sep 15th. Tori?s reef. Almost no current. But a bit of a weird dive, while after a view minute?s visibility turned a bit worse. Due to some kind of thermo cline. Not particles, but just blurry. As if there was some fresh water mingled with salt water. It only was a small part of the dive and on the way back we encountered the same experience. The rest of the day we just did not much. We bought ingredients for making our own dinner and make a big portion, so we could eat from it the next day as well. (Nassi)

Sep 16th. The Hilma Hooker. We really did want to do this dive, so Ruud did help me to get into the water, before he geared himself up. There were some small waves, but not troublesome, especially when I could lean on him. I really love this site. I think it is quite impressive to see the wreck doming up in front of you! We did add a wide-angle lens in front of our camera and made some very nice pictures of the wreck and surrounding reef.
We decided to do another night dive at the house reef. Again there was a tarpon, this time we made some settings to the camera for making better pictures of the shining fish... some did work out very well. The fish was very comfortable in our company, sometimes it was even annoying. When we watched to something else, he always sneaks up to us and get in our vision, or in front of the camera! One time he even swims in between us for a little while! We had a pretty long dive time, 70 min (though almost every dive was about 60 min or more). Dinner was the left over of the previous day!

Sep 17th. Our last day of diving. Two dives, the second one again at the house reef (very lazy, but nice). The first dive was at Bachelors Beach. Boy... this was a memorable dive! Very clear water again, and lots of fish, including barracuda?s. But we encountered also a spotted stingray and it let us come very close, while getting on with finding food. And after 10 min it just ventured away into the blue! If that was not enough, on the sandy part we spotted an octopus! He let us take pictures, but did want to hide. At first it made itself look very big, but crawled under a rock. Ruud took some pictures, and thought he saw the octopus starting to capture a fish. It turned out, later on the picture, that another resident of that rock chased him out of the hole, a moray eel!! That was a very lucky shot!! Very cool, if I may say so of the picture!
During the last dive, at the Calabas reef, we saw a turtle! What more could we wish for (a seahorse, but that did not happen, unfortunately)! And this was also our longest dive... 86 min.
For dinner we went to the Old Inn (we did eat here before and went here for breakfast almost every day). It was very good; the only thing was that out of the blue lots of mosquitoes swarmed around us. Really an angry lot! Glad that they had some bug repellent.

Sep 18th . Our last day. We visited the donkey sanctuary. All those donkeys and the small one, I think they perform a great job. The little donkeys are so cute! Of course we made a donation, before leaving the donkeys. We toured also to Lac Bay, but did not stay there for very long. We took the South way back, and were a bit amazed about the wilderness and all the rubbish that was washed ashore (not only by Ivan, but probably laying there for many years)
We had to turn the car back in, to AB, and also there were a lot of mosquitoes, all of a sudden again. Also they troubled the ladies behind the counter. Our driver, who took us back to the hotel, explained that they probably originated from Lac bay. (Probably the time of the year) Dinner was again at the hotel restaurant, but on a different spot, because Chibi Chibi was being renovated. The roof was damaged after Ivan. I ordered the same as at the start of the vacation, the delicious coconut shrimps...

Sep 19th. All good things have to end, and so does the vacation. We left at 2 pm, with 9 hours to spent in the plane (I always hate that part...)

But as they say... we still have the memories and lots of nice pictures! We really did have a great time!

Nice, Diana! By the way, your stingray picture is a spotted eagle ray. Love the show-off squid in the first squid shot above -- he's beautiful! Sorry Ivan impacted your trip, but glad you had fun nonetheless... and glad your knee wasn't seriously injured!

OOps, I indeed did know it was a spotted eagle ray... but somehow the name of stingray staid in my mind

Some other moment I completely forgot to tell. During election day (10th), after visiting the hospital, we went to Cultimara to get some drinks. But... No Alcohol could be sold due to the elections. I could not even 'wogga' my pain away... lol! Even at the restaurant (Old Inn) they were not allowed to give alcohol

I'm a bit curious what the outcome was of this election... Can anyone tell me??

As soon as I up-dated my website with lots of more pictures of this trip I will let you all know as well... (I think we had taken about 800 photo's)

Glad you had a great time, and that Ivan didn't ruin your trip. We were worried about you! I stay at Divi when not at Jake's, and I love that place! I hope the dock is rebuilt soon.. maybe it is already? Wishful thinking.

As always, you are beautiful. :-)

Hi Diana :-)
Great report. Nice 2 show us your trip. Sounds like Ivan failed 2 mess up you holiday and u were able 2 enjoy Bonaire.
Great pictures! Did u use the internal flash of the 5050 or an external strobe? (just being curious)
Hope the knee will get better soon.

About the divi pier... I think they are going to rebuilt, but on what timeline it is finished???

Igor, we did have an external flash (Ikelite DS50) and we used an orange filter, almost all the time, when we did not use the external flash for close-ups. (Does this sentence make sense??)

Diana - GREAT GREAT shots. I am jealous. That spotted eagle ray is spectacular - looks human doesn't he/she.

As for the elections - Referrendum B got 59% of the votes. And that is the one that wanted a direct link with Holland.

I am going to try to contain myself for 3 months now so everyone has to keep on putting up trip reports. We will leave on December 22 so I am already ready.

Igor, It's just an orange filter that can be screwed onto the UW housing. We ordered it at www.onderwaterhuis.nl There you can find the type of filter (it is not on the side of our filter, I found out...)

Mara... At least you have something to look forward to! And pre-fun is also very important (at least I think so...)

Wow, Diana! What a great trip report and your photos are beautiful. Sorry to hear about your knee but glad it was nothing more serious than it was. Ivan was an inconvenience for you but what a story you will have to tell for the rest of your life.
It's amazing to see the pic of the dive dock/pier and the dive hut and then in a heartbeat later....it is "gone". I LOVED that little hut...it reminded me of something out of New England fisherman's areas. So sorry to see it gone. We, too, stay at the Divi and love it. I have so many pics of that little hut...in daylight, sunset, etc. It was so cute. I hope they can replace it with something similar.

Thanks again for the detailed report and gorgeous photos! Ayo. Carole

Loved the squid and spotted eel stories and shots! I have never had a squid pose for me - that gives me hope that someday they will not turn tail and run when they see me.
